Blues: Brendan Fevola's OK despite crutches drama

Jon Ralph | March 18, 2009 12:00am

BRENDAN Fevola is on crutches just eight days before Carlton's season opener against Richmond, but the club maintains he will play.

Fevola is one of the main drawcards for the blockbuster MCG clash against the Tigers and their new recruit Ben Cousins, which is expected to draw 80,000 fans next Thursday night.

The Blues spearhead bruised his heel in a marking collision against Fremantle in Bunbury on Saturday and was still on crutches at the club's private training session yesterday.

But Carlton manager Steven Icke said he had been cleared of any bone damage, and yesterday emphatically stated Fevola would be playing against the Tigers.

"We expect him to play in Round 1. He's protecting the heel. but the advice we have been given is that he will play Round 1, that he will be available for Round 1," Icke said yesterday.

He said there was nothing alarming about a player being on crutches only a week out from a game.

Doctors often require players to use protective moon boots or crutches to give their injured joints total rest.

Icke said Fevola was likely to hit the training track early next week.

"(The crutches) are just a way of keeping any sort of contact off the heel," he said.

"He will train this week, but he may not do work on the ground, he may do his work in the gym and the pool.

"We will basically keep him off his feet, and let the bruise come out, then we expect him to train fully next week."

The Blues yesterday elevated rookies Aaron Joseph and Sam Jacobs, which means they can play every game this season.

Jacobs, a 202cm ruckman Jacobs has starred in the pre-season in his third year at Carlton, played all four games. Joseph, 18, was the club's first selection in last year's rookie draft, and was highly impressive running with Gary Ablett in the NAB Cup semi-final.

Meanwhile, controversial Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin is nearing a comeback date, with the key tall able to play again in the AFL as early as Round 2.

Carlton successfully challenged the AFL ruling that he needed to serve his four-match penalty in the season proper after striking teammate Cameron Cloke in a practice match.

The Blues' progression through three NAB Cup matches means he will miss only Round 1 through suspension, and he is drawing closer to full fitness after lingering calf issues.

The club is likely to play some sort of intra-club scratch match on Saturday, and O'hAilpin is allowed to play if fit.

He remains outside the club's best 25, but may be used if injuries strike down several key talls early in the year.

Crutches are only a little worrying, if he was wearing a moon boot then I would be very worried. Hopefully he can kick a bag round one and ease our concerns.

He wouldn't happen to have a sports almanac he'd be willing to give to me, would he?

Here's hoping Fev will be right to go come Thursday week and this isn't a cover-up by the footy club. The fact he's on crutches doesn't necessarily mean he can't be in a position to play by game day, but I'm hoping the club will opt to rest him rather than play him and prolong the bruising (if there's risk of that). I'd rather him miss a week and be 100% after that than play at 85% for a month.

No need to worry about the crutches. I've bruised my heel a number of times (the same one), and although you can walk on it, it bloody hurts! One risk of even a minor foot injury is that without crutches you risk injury to the other leg through overcompensating. The club are doing the right thing by keeping him "on ice".

Hopefully the bruising goes down before he puts his boot on.

O'hAilpin practically returns from suspension to take Stevens' spot. ;) :D

It appear Jacobs and Warnock are still growing.

We need a Blue Room thread to keep track of the score...
Blue Room is where us intellectuals solve the world's problems.
These stats have no place there!

There was a news article on the Carltonfc.com.au site saying that Fev was fine and not on crutches. The news item appears to have been pulled. That's a little scary? Pull the Fev's ok story?

Certainly is a wise move by the club. Given that he's just gotten a full pre-season under his belt, a week on crutches to take the pressure off his heal will do him more good than harm, and the club should be applauded for this.

As long as he can train at pretty much full tilt without any pain in his foot, then there are no problems whatsoever.

massive cover up by the club. Bruised foot indeed. From the footage i saw on mad monday, it was at least a foot and a half.

................ :( Hopefully it isn't as bad as it looks. I remember he hyper-extended his knee against the Roos a couple of years ago and everyone assumed he needed a knee reconstruction. He came back onto the ground at half time.

12 minute recovery from a full knee reco. I recall being impressed myself at the time.
