As a bit of football novice who has loosely followed South Melbourne over the years, could somebody please fill me in on the ethnic followings of clubs in the Victorian Football Federation. I am planning on going to a few SM games in the Premier League this year & I'm interested to see what nationalities follow each club (eg Heidelberg, Oakleigh & Kingston are all Greek clubs, Preston & Altona are Maco's. etc).

Any info would be much appreciated. BTW, this is not a post to inflame fights between certain factions, just want to know for the sake of knowing!

Yeah, I get what your saying. But there isn't really any current Melbourne based team that you could promote to A-League, as all of them have the one thing going for them which will destroy Professional Football, Ethnic Ties. Nothing wrong with it at State Level, but as shown in the NSL, it causes a lot of problems which is why Melbourne Victory was created, a team for everyone from all backgrounds, so you don't have to be the natio that's exclusive to the club.

Let's see the clubs:

Preston Lions: Macedonians.
South Melbourne: Greeks.
Bulleen Zebras: Italians.
Melbourne Knights: Croatians.
Sunshine Georgies: Maltese.
St.Albans Saints: Sister Club to the Knights, Croatians.
Knox City: Polish I think.
Bosna Melbourne: Bosnian.

And out of those teams, only Preston, Hellas, Bosna Melbourne and Melbourne Croatia have stadiums that are even up to Professional Level.

Central Coast should be replaced by APIA Leichhardt and Knights should be replaced by a whole new Victorian team, but where that team will be based is what I'm stuck on.

From another thread.

Here's what all the current VPL clubs were traditionally. It's abit generalised to say that the majority of the supporters are now but it gives an insight.

Greek - Heidelberg, South Melbourne, Oakleigh, Kingston
Italian - Essendon, Bulleen, Fawkner/Whittelsea
Croatian - Melbourne Knights, Altona Magic
Maltese - Green Gully, Susnshine George Cross
German - Richmond
Maco - Preston Lions
Anglo/British - Frankston

All correct except for Altona who are Macedonian. Were Bentleigh relegated last season? They were a Cypriot side. Suprising that Richmond have made it up to the VPL. Is Carl Gilder coaching there? And what about St Albans? did they finally go down? They must have been a premier side for 20 years. Always a great comp the VPL.

Yeah Bentleigh and St. Albans went down, with Richmond and Kingston up. Kingston have opened the checkbook hardcore with Curcija, Anthopoulos, Iosifides joining the likes of Spiteri on the books

ROFL @ Altona Magic being classed as Croatian when they never have been Croatian!
