Justin Murphy has retired.
Murphy retires, Thomas de-listed

Friday, 18 November 2005

Essendon will provide the AFL with its second list lodgement this afternoon and Justin Murphy and Paul Thomas will not be included. Murphy today informed the club that he was retiring from AFL football while Thomas was told he would be de-listed. These latest list changes bring to 10 the number of players cut from the 2005 primary list.

"I want to thank Essendon and my teammates for giving me another chance to play AFL football," Murphy said. "I have given the game everything I have got and won't look back with any regrets. The time is right to call it a day."

Murphy played 40 games with Essendon for a career total of 185. He averaged more than 17 possessions per game with Essendon, kicked 28 goals and was joint Best Finals’ Player with James Hird in 2004. Thomas played eight games for Essendon and was also an integral part of the Bendigo Bombers' success in 2004.

Essendon has previously de-listed Sam Hunt, Marc Bullen, Damian Cupido, Ben Haynes, Mark Alvey and Ty Zantuck. Ted Richards was traded to Sydney while Matthew Allan retired. On top of this rookies Adrian Wilson and Ryan Bain were de-listed.

Im surprised Thomas is getting delisted too, seems a bit harsh considering we've delisted 10. So does anyone know what we will do with the 7 spots we have?

Theres..

1. Pick 7
2. Neagle
3. Cole
4. Campo
5. Heffernan
6. Pick 53 I think
7. So Im guessing that leaves us with 2 picks and Im guessing up for consideration would be Green from Hawthorn, Adrian Wilson, any of the players that have been delisted already or hopefully not Mercuri.

Not exactly.
We have 8 spots open, one of which will be Neagle. The other 7 places will be pick 7, 19, 51 and then we can use the other 4 spots in a number of ways. We will almost certainly use two PSD picks, so that leaves two more places. We can put Hird or Fletch onto the main list giving us an extra rookie spot or use 3 or 4 PSD picks.

I'm thinking we might do this:
Pick 7
Pick 19
Neagle
Pick 51
5th Round Pick (probably be about pick 65)
PSD Pick 4
PSD 2nd Round Pick

And then bring Hird onto the main list and pick up 4 rookies (Jolley is retained i believe).

Don't worry there is another Carlton hasbeen on the way to the Carlton retirement home. :)

1 by 1 sheedy is retiring or the blues ******* who used to play well against us.

Whitnall is next.

Thomas very unlucky, was very hard at it player for a young bloke!

He's better for the club then Heff and Campo!

The right decision but i'm glad he played for us. Kept us in that final vs the Dees last year and deservedly shared best finals player with Hirdy to cap off a great year.

Best of luck to him.

Thomas i couldn't care about to be honest because he wasn't near our best 22 and i'd rather guys like Nash and Slatts taking his spot.

There were many not close to our best 22, in fact further away than Thomas several of which are still on the list. Hope he proves them wrong and I think he will.

Best clean out in years, about time its happened, new captain , new players, new assistant coaches, new era, bring on '06

Very well spoken essendon. It is like a breath of fresh air isn't it. If they pick up a monster ruckman, a couple of athletic utilities and a flexible defender (or two) in the upcoming draft (please take Toovey) it will have been a satisfying year given all the promising youngsters blooded or who made progress this yr.

Read an article on Ash Eames, he picked up footy late in life (19) because he was raised as a seventh day adventist. Has only taken footy seriously last 3 years. Is a real powerhouse of a unit. He won two championships on the Australian strongman circuit as well as a couple of Trans-Tasman Strongman titles.

This was taken directly from the article:
"He got there lugging trucks, lifting up 150-kilograms boulders and loading sacks onto trucks, among other things. At his most powerful, Eames could run ("in a kind of jerky way") carrying two 120-kilogram cylinders. Competing at about 130kg, he came up against men closer to 170kg, but found he had more endurance. "

Given all this and his performances for Springvale this year I could definately see us taking him at 51 if he already isnt taken.

Disappointed to see Thommo cut. He will prove them wrong tho if he goes to another club. Hopefully he can be picked up in the pre-season draft other join wilbur back home :)

yeh im not happy about thomas, murphy should ******** off. thommo should stay
Fair enough. Essendon supporters owe Murphy zero loyalty. He used Essendon to prolong his career and Essendon used him to fill a void. He will never be thought off in glowing terms in Essendon circles and rightly so.

Campo should have thought of this, two years on if he continues to run hot and cold, the Bombers youngsters will take his spot and he will be given the boot too, regardless of how nice he thinks Sheedy is. Unless he wins the Norm Smith medal in a surprise Bomber flag, then he will hold no special place in the hearts of Bomber fans. A personality conflict with the coach and a few losing seasons should not ruin your legacy at a club, alas it seems it is destined to be.

I think in murphy's case it go to show that if you dont have the heart for it then all the skill in the world wont help you. Same could be said about cupido.

Murphy was good for us in 2003 finals campaign but this year he was abysmal, good luck to him but bring on the kids. At least campo looks like he tries.

shame about thmas but we had some very similar players who would always take a senior berth ahead of him, I hope he finds another club maybe richmond who could do with a small backline player.

Murphy played good footy for us for a year and half, so instead of us being so negative all the time, i'm gonna good luck for the future murph, not good riddens.
Well said, I agree.

A wonderful career at AFL level.
