So anyway, I thought I'd tell my story about my first time, which happened last night.

We were out for a mate's birthday, and having walked half way across the city finding no watering holes of any quality, we decide to head to Sky City rAdelaide. Me and mate decide to take the plunge and play a few hands, so taking $60 and $50 dollars worth of chips respectively we head out separate ways and decide to meet up at a certain time irrespective of how we're going. As it happens, this didn't happen :D

So I'm not sure of all the terminology here, but we're playing 2/4 hold 'em with raises of 4/8/8 or whatever. I didn't really even catch on to that at all. My first hand I get dealt 5 and 6 of clubs, so I decided to have a look at the river. At this point I think I had two pair. Probably should remember. But anyway, the betting continues and I end up getting a full house, can't remember which way, but I win $70 in my first ever hand of the real stuff.

I then continue to win my next four hands, I think it was, there was a pair of queens (with an ace) in there somewhere, three kings and a some two-pairs, perhaps. So I'm up about $210 (rough estimate) and start to get cocky, talking **** with this other guy across the table, mainly self-depreciating humour, but I should've kept my mouth shut. At some point here, my mate had been cleaned up after about 15 hands and was watching me and my growing hoard of chips. He is generally a much better player than I.

On my last hand, there were two 10s showing (and an ace), I thought I'd have a crack with the pair of aces, which was clearly a big mistake as the guy who I was previously talking **** with, had the third, and took about $24 of my hard earned. So I leave the table $176 up and grab a pie floater.

It was good.

You did better than I would. Congrats.

On sober reflection, it would seem to me that a bit of lady luck was at play. When I sat down there were two people with stacks of what must have been $300-400, and everyone else with $50-100 (one of whom I *******ed on the first hand). Because you can't raise people all-in, it really takes the bluff out of play, so it comes down to who got the cards. I guess I did.

Going in I would've been happy to play for a few hours and break even, just to get the experience. It turned out I played 1 and a half to 2 hours for probably 25-30 hands (that's my estimate, I really lost track of time) and got out of there while I still had some decent money to my name. I would've like to play for longer, but George Washington was talking to me.

If you're playing limit poker, technically you can go all in. When only two people are left in a pot, you can raise and re-raise as much as you like, the four-bet cap is removed.

I've only ever played once drunk, and that was about a month ago when i was up a lot on the pokies, took $100 onto the 4/8 table (at the crown) and played the worst poker i've ever played. I basically never folded pre-flop and played hands no sober person would play. Funnily enough though, i walked away with $500!

First time I went to Crown I sat down on the 1/2 Limit tables with 60 bucks worth of chips. I was nervous as all hell during the first couple of hands...like I was literally shaking. Folded a few hands before I had a look with pocket 10's. Ended up hitting another 10 on the turn and shortly after I had won my first ever hand in a casino :)

My last two hands of the night came up flushes...and I won about 150 bucks from them alone. After the second one...I bailed up my chips and strutted up to the cashier. 497 dollars. I couldn't believe it. Goodbye debt :D
