Yeah, give over jurisdiction to the polica/riot squads from China/Indonesia/South Korea/or some South American country. They seem to know how to crush protests. If Aussie cops and riot police did that, imagine the whinging from the civil libaterians and all the 'moral' and ethics' groups .

You forgot to throw in the all-encompassing "do gooder" as well as the other cliches......fair dinkum, have a listen to youself, crapping on about what a great country this is, then seeking to "crush" protest......a little hypocritical, perhaps?

I wouldn't care if they did it to a yank flag. But when they do it to their own countries flag, they should leave. Leave now.

Perhaps a little time in Iraq may make their little brains understand how priviliged they are to live in this country.

Having Watched the TV footage I can only think that it was a big disappointment for the perpetrators. Instead of bursting into an impressive ball of flames it kind of melted into a navy blue blob. Must have been a cheap synthetic material flag that was made in Taiwan.

Isn't that the whole point of being allowed to burn the flag???

Its a free country.

They chose to express themselvs in this way.

I find it quite boring to be honest, as it really is only a piece of cloth

This country is about its way of life, its people and its laws

its not about a flag.

The more attention you give them, the better they feel about it.

Most people in this thread are just being over emotional and politicallyl correct.

It is not just a piece of cloth, it is a part of Australia's identity. I have no problem with people marching along the street, even though it has no bearing on the decision that has already been made. War should be the last option, but we should accept the Government's decision, after all they were democratically elected and if the majority of Australian's are unhappy they will be democratically removed at the next election.

Lot of good that will do, Iraq will already have been bombed, that's closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.

Oh & it isn't a privilege to live here if you were born here, it is your right & being a democracy, it is also your right to display your opposition to a government decision.

So it's the right of the Iraqi people to live under the regime of a dictator who has killed over a million of his own citizens?

Is that the reason we are going to war?

I think not.

There are various reasons for going to war. It is not just about oil. Iraq has been a problem for the past 12 years. It is not something that has developed over night.
I for one do not wish for war to occur, however I can see how it may be necessary and can be justified.

firstly, being at the prostests in melbourne i think it is unfair and downright sacremungering to only shopw the bad points. In melboune there were NO ARRESTS & NO DAMMAGE. All the students go together and voiced our opinions..that was all. and the media focuses on sydney and perth! :o

secondly, they have a right to voice their opinions...free DEMOCRATIC country, and if people aren't allowed to criticise a government it's a dictatorship!! It's only a bloody flag!

Only a flag I'm proud to be born under.

Oh, and as for Melbourne's 'good' behaviour, calling Bush a baby-killer is OK then? Maybe no arrests or damage, but the behaviour was still pretty apalling from what I saw.

Then I guess you are going to say that Howard is the same as Hussein! I think not.

I'm not saying I agree with them burning the flag, but think of it this way.

The patriotism which leads you to be so enraged at the act of flag burning is the exact same thing that pushes people to burn the flag.

It's just that these people feel so betrayed and ashamed by the actions of their country, actions being undertaken in their name that they feel the need to express it in this way.

Do you think that someone apathetic about Australia would burn the flag? No. These people love Australia, but they don't like what Australia is becoming.

You love Australia but you express it in a different way.

Yin and Yang.

Or...they might just be ****s! Who knows?

At last, a sane and unemotive response that accurately reflects the reality of the actions.

If Howard follows Bush in bombing Iraq & in doing so, results in civilians, including babies getting killed, yes then Howard will be a baby killer.

"ëdited to make it easier for daicos to understand, that I wasn't saying they were going to deliberately target civilians."

Sorry, I didn't realise the Armed forces are going to delibrately bomb civilian buildings
Indeed. Everyone knows its ok to kill civilians by accident.

Interesting trend of this thread - why is it South Australians showing the most liberal views?
