I've never used it to find a room myself, but back in the day I used it a couple of times to advertise a sublet.

It was okay. One of the advantages was that it encourages people to link their social media, so if someone messaged about the room I could check out their Facebook page. Usually that tells you more about someone than the blurb they write, although you still have to take it with a grain of salt. But (unless it's changed) there's no rating mechanism so you really have no idea if the person you're dealing with has a bad record. At least in my area, I found the demographics a bit weird - it was full of really young female uni students, and slightly creepy older guys.

If you have to flat with a stranger, it's as good a way as any to find one. Just be picky - there's a reason a lot of people on there don't know anyone who's willing to live with them.

great way to find another student from Hongkers to split a bedroom with a third person in the CBD!

Has anyone used the flatmates website to find a place/room to rent?

If so, i'd like to hear about your experience and if you would recommend using it.
Yep, was fine but i was the one who was asking for roommates for my apartment to help pay the mortgage.

The last flatmate i found thought flatmates.com.au was a doozy though. She was very nice and clean but.... the stupidest person i have ever met. So many stories but the one that stood out was she met a guy when she was away one week and brought him home as her boyfriend. I asked what he did for a job and he said he was a pirate.... (turns out he worked with the Sea Shepherds but called himself a pirate). Anyway he stayed a week and the last day she lent him $1000. I didnt see him for a few days so i asked flatmate where he was and she goes "i dont know! i gave him the money and he said he had to go work but he hasnt contacted me for a few days" . I felt sorry for her but she didnt seem too upset. Anyway after she hadnt seen him for 6 months, i am in bed and hear someone banging at the door so i got up and he had come back. I thought shit, but i went to my flatmates room and told her it was him and she said its ok i will see him. I go back to bed and literally 10 mins later they were banging and it went on all night. The next day she and pirate were going out and she goes,.. i wont be long i am just going to the ATM, and yes... she went to get more money for him. Another $1000 gone and thats the last time she saw him.
there are so many more stories but i wont bore you!

Am totally picturing this guy in your story:

Had a few interesting flatmates but Michael stands out as the most bizarre. He had a reasonable job at *stationary company* and seemed like a slightly odd but otherwise OK guy when he first moved in. He then purchased World of Warcraft and from there things went downhill pretty quickly. He would be locked in his room constantly, Warcraft noises rumbling at all hours of the day and night. He lost a lot of weight as he wasn't eating and would do things like leave a pot of water boiling on the stove and forget about it.

He called in sick to work every day and was eventually fired, not that we knew about this until he announced one day that he couldn't pay rent and was moving out the next day as a result. His parents came and helped him pack and we gave him a hand moving furniture, discovering a circle of crystals under his bed in the process. He advised that this circle of crystals helped prevent people from talking about him, which clearly didn't work as we'd been discussing things non stop since the moving out announcement. Moved into his parents place and my housemate saw him on Warcraft for months afterwards continuing to feed his addiction.

The strangest thing about him though is he went out one night with two beautiful Swedish girls he knew, they came back to our place and the three of them slept in his bed in their underwear when there was plenty of other sleeping areas available. He didn't have a crack at either of them which baffles me to this day.

haha no they dont. But she did get married to an Englishman so he could come live in the country. 10 years later they are still married and he is still in England and she is in Australia!

Sounds like a perfect husband/wife set up to me ;)

I once lived with a guy similar to this, except he never had a job, just a girlfriend. they'd all sit on the same couch together in the middle of 30 degree days watching old reruns.

He was very overweight and very unhygienic. we were all 17-19 and pinching each other's beers from the fridge but he would cower to his room if we were in there. but the second it was free, he and his girlfriend would camp there and wouldn't leave for like 16 hours. as in, literally just stay in the room. the weirdest thing was early in the uni year, it was hot so youd come back from a class and for some reason half the blinds were shut and the other half fully open while the heater was on 10 (it only went to 10, it wasn't Spinal Tap). the general shitty housemate grottiness of weet bix being porcelain-hard on plates, them eating macaroni cheese out of a pan was just minor shit compared to it.

He used to play some really shit shooting game really loudly all night and when I'd ask him to turn it down, he spoke a bit like Chewbecca so would go "aarrgghh-rokaay" but not actually turn it down.

One day this very vanilla kid started coming over and the three of them were very chummy. did odd things for grown adults though. like buy different colour light sabres (pink for her) and play kiss chasey or something out down the footy oval (no they werent on acid). apparently they met on Warcraft and found out they lived on the same street (it was a big student area).

Me and my housemate always used to say that the new guy was going to steal this ****-ugly girlfriend.

One night we were having beers about to go out and he mysteriously sat with us and had a drink. bourbon and fanta.

We got home and the next morning I woke up about 9am and my housemate goes "youre lucky you're hungover" and shows me a video of the housemate spewing all down the corridor, covering every inch of the lino, and then falling down in it while my mate stops filming to help him. we have a laugh and I apologise on his behalf. we go to the lounge to look back on our own night and see the housemate sheepish on the couch. I walk back to my room and the girlfriend walks out of her room and i smile hello (hated the bitch) and then hear a guy's voice inside the room... wait... wasn't the housemate on the couch?!
