Embroidered into the back of a Collingwood Football Club issued hat to my Dad.

My most prized possession.

When Dad met his Princess... (My Mum), and they did the old school style of dating and courting each other, they fell in love - Dancing, working, a little bit of socializing and of course they were Dancing!

When they merged their working lives to become a family/ create a Family then decisions needed to be made. Both owned successful businesses in their own right, one was Plumbing and one was Printing... but Family was first (before their Family existed)... they created a environment and a Family that I am part of... that I am proud of.

After Mum sold her Printing business to run the books for Dad's plumbing business... they etched in stone they were going to get married... but she had one demand that was yet to be settled.

Mum was a Protestant... Dad was a Catholic.

Mum gave Dad an ultimatum.

Mum says "I'll become a Catholic, we'll get married in a Catholic church, our children will be brought up as Catholics"

(Important to my Dads parents)

Dad says "What's the catch?"

Mum Says "You don't barrack for Melbourne anymore, and our Family are brought up as Pies supporters"

Dad never backed this story up...

He was no convert...

He was a believer... He was Black and White forever.

From the age of 10 or 11 it was the only place I was allowed to walk freely, unguided, with no apparent guardian.... Victoria Park, Waverly, the G... Why?

Seriously Why?

I knew why.

No matter who you were, where you came from, if you wear Black and White, you are part of my family. I wear Black and White... everyones got my back.

I will never forget turning up to any home game at Vic Park on the opening siren and have my brothers and sisters push me through the crowd to the fence screaming "Kids"... so we got the best seat in the house... for the Daicos show! In the Daicos pocket!

My Dad passed shortly after the Freo loss this year... I had to mention to the nurse that you might want to give us our space after 7:30pm... he said why... I said "it's a Family thing"... the nurse says "my cousin played in the 1990 GF"...

Being allowed to scream at the tele, with my mum and sister being louder than everyone in the entire hospital made it all make sense... let alone a legends cousin as my old mans nurse... talking 1990 with us...

What can you say.

Do not offer condolences in this thread... or to me.

Just think about this...

Black and White.

it makes sense to all of us!

I still don't like it. Every time I see this motto, I visualize grown men in black and white picking flowers in a field. Private schools have Latin mottos and I am not so sure that our particular one is the best choice for an AFL club. The only people able to comprehend Latin are classical scholars and priests, and I am not so sure that your average Collingwood supporter identifies with such people.

Every time I vent my misgivings on this I get shot down in flames by closet B&W Latin scholars. For what it's worth, I did 3 years Latin at school, and yes, I was a private school boy. Not something I boast about given a remark once thrown my way suggesting that the next best thing to a girl is a private school boy. Fortunately, the vast majority of private schools are now coed.

Unfortunately for society today, a number of state schools have latin mottos too!

Also LOL to the second bolded part. I went to a private school and haven't heard that one before :D

Remember Eddie wanted to change our emblem because one Magpie was unlucky and two magpies was lucky or something. Floreat Pica.

Perhaps you are younger than me. Besides, I only heard it once but it certainly stuck in my memory. For a long time after I was very reluctant to admit to my educational background. It does seem weird that state schools should be adopting Latin mottoes when none of them would actually be running Latin courses. The teaching of Latin is surely all but dead throughout the education system in this country. I seriously doubt there would be many private schools that even teach it now.

I agree with you 100% TGG.

And I say that as someone who now later in life appreciates the value of Latin and I wish I'd had classes (although do know that I would have hated it as a kid, I would have considered it was utterly pointless at the time, and would have been an awful student ... Kind of like the Mandarin classes I was forced to take back in the early 80's    )

Sweet story ...

... Sincere question: What do you think bound your family together more: Catholicism or Collingwood?
