I've never bothered reading any books relating to footy or more specifically AFL.

Anyone recommendations?

Recent or new it doesn't bother me as long as I can buy them easily.

"Football Ltd" is supposed to be a very good analysis of the AFL in the 1980s and 1990s, covering mergers, expansion and finances.

"Kill For Collingwood" is probably the best history book of the club, especially the early years.

Had a quick look at Emma Quayle's updated version of The Draft today, it's basically the same book but with a follow-up chapter at the end to catch up with each of the five players (Cotchin, Rioli, Ebert, McEvoy and Veszpremi) at the end of 2012.

Interesting reading Rioli and McEvoy's accounts of playing in losing grand finals, it would have been much harder for McEvoy after being dropped for the drawn match. He still spends time on the farm when he can, both he and Cotchin talked about the importance of having pursuits/interests outside of footy. Cotchin is a born leader, he has been brilliant since taking over the captaincy at the Tigers.

It was very sad reading the section on Brad Ebert and his account of J-Mac's death, was picturing the scene with Brad and his girlfriend sitting down with Dani (John's partner), can't imagine how awful they must have felt :(

Highly recommend this one, a great piece about the evolution from state leagues (mainly the VFL) to the AFL in the 80's.

Also a must read is "The Final Quarter" by Martin Flanagan. It's a compilation of three books he's done, one on the 1970 GF, one on the year he spent with Footscray in 1993 and one on the game in time of war written in September 2001 from memory. A great read and if you've read Flanagan articles in The Age you'll know he's one of the best writers there is about the actual game and it's cultural impact, not the scandal and politics so many journos go after.

Just picked up a copy of 'Night Games: Sex, Power and a Journey into the Dark Heart of Sport' by Anna Krien which ill be reading next, im really looking forward to reading it as it won the William Hill sports book of the year

Rhett Bartlett's book is well worth the read
