I’m happy we’ve retained the bounce, it’s a truly unique element to our game. I wish they would stop trying to tamper with our sport. The game is more like basketball these days, everybody attacks and everybody defends, its sprint up and down the ground...not as many heavy hits and tackles.

I would have preferred to retain the traditional ruling on drawn grand finals also.

Anybody else in the same camp?

I genuinely miss suburban grounds - walking through enemy streets from the train.

And of course Victoria Park. Liked standing on the clay at the Yarra Falls end or nabbing one of the few unreserved seats. Loved the visceral tribalism. Miss it very much.

I'm ambivalent on the bounce, like the uncertainty it brings, continually frustrated by the inability of current umpires to master the skill. I think with Grundy, Cox and Moore taking most of the ruck contests for us we are likely better served by the abolition of the bounce.

How's the arrogance of umpires in thinking they have a say in overturning one of the games great traditions.

I'm still dirty on the AFL bowing to umpire pressure groups and banning players/coaches from giving them a good old fashion spray for getting a decision wrong. Until then Umpire abuse had existed for as long as the game itself.

Bring back the spray imo.

Lace up jumpers, my heart died a little when they were banned
And don't get me started on no more oranges at 3/4 time...the bastards

Funny you mentioned this
Hawthorns golden goose has just been jettisoned from the umpires
His father was the most controversial umpire of all

I think Cox and Moore do Ok reading the inconsistent bounce. Grundy on the other hand has no idea and would greatly benefit from a throw-up. I cant understand why they just don't start every quarter with a bounce (to hold some tradition) and then throw it the rest of the time.

The bounce is one of things that when they take it away people will scream "tradition" and say they are converting to rugby or some shit. A year later they won't even notice it's gone and the same people will be threatening to watch rugby because they modified the interchange or something.

pros - without the bounce umpire matt nicholls is no longer a required player

cons - tradition

I also miss the old VFA Divisions 1 and 2: Frankston v arch-rival Mordialloc was huge.

Panel vans would be backed up to the boundary fence of Frankston Oval with bogans sitting atop their roofs hurling abuse and the occasional tinnie.

As a kid, I coveted a Sandman with velour trim (and peroxided girls with white ankle boots).

My cousin had a Sandman, took me to the Drive In a couple of times. He sat up front watching the movie ( some horror flick, Freddy or Jason?) while I necked in the back with my GF.

When I talk to him now I refer to it as the fumble bus, as at 14 that's all that really happened.:p

Not sure how far you would have gone in the early years of the game, when the rules were officiated by the players, by giving your own captain a spray.
