I just started playing and I'm not sure what type of cleats I should use. I have some soccer boots. Are those good enough? And is there any protocol on the length and type of spike on the bottom? ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

cdmphy - I wear soccer cleats when I play. I play as a rover or follower in the middle of the field. This position usually requires a lot of running so soccer shoes work well for me. But, I know some of our defensive players (bigger guys) wear grid iron football shoes. They like the added support of the hi topped cleat.

So, I would suggest soccer cleats unless you are a large guy that will surely be playing defense. Then you might think of using football cleats.

Hope that's helpful.

Joel, Footy is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. Our league formed five years ago with four teams and now has almost 35 clubs across the country. Great to here from some far flung followers of one of the world's great religions, Aussie Rules.

I'm a fan of your Gridiron (see user name) and I love soccer, but no game on earth beats Aussie Footy.

It's interesting the boot subject because sport companies out here mainly sell soccer boots, with only a few designs specifically for footy.

Sean Wellman (Essendon F.C.) is a practicing podiotrist (spelling?) and he was interviewed about this subject, he said he didn't think the soccer boots were ideal for footy requirements. They are a more slender and softer boot for the feel they need in soccer to turn the ball. Where as in footy you turn the ball by placing it differently by hand on to the boot.

Alot of guys out here now wear a boot that looks like a x-trainer with rubber short cleets. I would have killed for a pair when I was playing 'cause I never moved as well in the soccer style as my foot was too wide.

Also if you can afford it get two pairs, one for dry grounds (molded souls) and one for wet (longer stops or cleets)

All the best guys and don't forget to spread the Aussie Rules Gospel.

Go Bombers! Futures so bright we're gotta wear shades.
