That time will soon be upon us when we fork out money for the annual footy tipping comp at work, the pub, footy club etc...

Apart from picking the most winners each week & at the end of the season, what are some of the different types of footy tipping comps you have been in.

I once went in a tontine where you pick 1 team, if it wins you stay in, if it loses you're out. I lasted a week.

Last season I went in one with a difference. You picked 1 team. If it won you got the number of points they won by, if it lost you went backwards by the number of points they lost by. My 14 y.o. nephew came 2nd, got off to a flyer last year & was on 115 points after round 1. I wonder who he tipped.

At my father in laws work they give points according to ladder position, so for example if 12th on the ladder played 3rd on the ladder & you picked the side placed 12th & they win, you get 12 points. Tends to be too confusing for some.

I ran a footy tipping comp in 2004 and 2005 and won both years. I didn't rig it, but didn't really have the time to run it in 2006.

Basically, there are sixteen people in it. A fifteen round fixture is compiled and each week you go head-to-head with another tipper.

If you tip more winners than your opponent, you are awarded the win and four points. Draws are fairly common and you are awarded two points for them. Obviously zero points for a loss.

There is also a FOR and AGAINST to separate those on equal points. Instead of using percentage like used in a normal AFL season, those with the highest "FOR" are ranked higher. Then it goes on "AGAINST".

There is also one extra point up for grabs each round. This is known as your "TRUMP" team. You put your trump on the result you are most confident about, so if all goes well you can get up to five points in one round.

After fifteen rounds, the top eight contest a four-week final series, just like the one used in the AFL. Rules are the same, except this time to separate those who come a draw, a "margin difference" tie break rule comes into effect. Not only do you tip your eight winners, and your trump team, but you also have to tip margins for your winners. The combined total of points your margins of your winning teams are out by has to be lower than your opponent's combined total to beat them.

In 2004 the "TRUMP" wasn't used, so we only did that for one year. It doesn't hurt to include one new tipping item each season.

A chap at work runs an interesting tipping comp.

It costs you $10 to be in it and the winner last year got $1,800. It is a winner take-all competition. You pay $10 at the start and no more.

For each of the 20 rounds you pick one team that you think is going to win.

If your team loses you are out.

The competition keeps going until there is only one player left who collects all of the money.

So, 180 players started off. After the end of 10 rounds there were 3 left. Imagine those 3 sweating on their team to win, because when you pick the teams at the start of the competition, you can't change them.

Somebody picked up the jackpot in the 13th round.

last year I picked who-ever was playing Carlton to win, but Carlton won one of the early games and I was knocked out early.

A few years ago the winner picked Essendon to win every game and they collected in about round 10.

A lot of people get knocked out when the 'certainties' get beat.

its very interesting if you stay in it long enough.

Tontine. Normally you can't pick the same team every week.

We have something similar at my work except once you have picked a team you cant pick them for 5 weeks and the same if you pick against a team. Means you cant pick the best team every week or pick against the easybeats. Makes it very interesting when you only have 1 or 2 games to pick out of.

Have been in one like that, you pick a winner in 1 game for the round, if that team wins you stay in, if they loose your out. You had to look ahead a bit though because the next round you couldn't tip on a game with either of the sides from the previous rounds tip.

Think that makes sense.

For a bit of fun we might have to run one on BF for all the Doggies supporters. First prize is bragging rights.

IM IN :thumbsu:
SERRIOUS LETS GET 1 GOING IF WE CAN ?

I'm happy to manage this little one, won't be too difficult, provided I'm not cutting across what someone else has done in past seasons.

If it's OK with everyone I'll put out info (rules & stuff) closer to the season starting.

But basically it's just tip ONE team, if it wins you're in, loses or draws you're out. I'll work out the finer details in due course about what teams you can't tip (because you tipped them the week before etc...).
