Pick 25 and only 20 years old.
Played 11 games in his first season including a premiership
Contracted to 2027 (i think) so he has this and next year to find his way back into the AFL

If he does want to leave and there is no suggestion that he does the best he can do is perform well in the VFL.

I have not seen a VFL game this year, but his figures indicate he is playing at a good standard.

He is OOC this year. Only last year's draftees get 3 year contracts.

The only thing that makes sense to me is if the club already knows that he wants out. They presumably would have offered him another contract and if he hasn’t resigned by now then he is going imo. So why play him?

It's a popular folk theory but I honestly doubt this actually ever plays out in anything other than exceptional circumstances.

I'm rather surprised he's not in for Berry but my guess would be that he's been given a development goal he hasn't ticked off quite yet.

If there's one thing we know for sure, the answer will only reveal itself after exhaustive uninformed speculation.

Fagan highlighted at his Press Conference that Defence is our problem at the moment.
I took that to mean "whole of team" defence, rather than just the "defenders".

Marshall offers little at the moment in that regard (still gun shy re physical contact) ...... non-selection is understandable.

I get what you're saying, but calling Sam 'gun shy re physical contact' is a bit OTT.
No way he's getting senior final and GF selection last year if that was the case.

Makes sense though that he needs further physical development in order to impose himself more strongly in contested and defensive footy.

It is strange he still can’t get a look in. It’ll be a shame if he does go because I doubt we get much for him.

We are trying to three-peat. We aren't deciding not to play someone or dropping someone because they are likely to leave. C'mon people.

I don’t think Sam will go.
I read an article in his draft year in which he said that he regretted boarding in Melbourne and should have stayed in Queensland.
I think he’s a Queenslander at heart and he’ll stay.
He will be a great midfielder for us one day.

I'm inclined to trust Fagan on this one.
It's a fair bet over the past years pitting bigfooty vs fagan. I am definitley guitly a few times.

But what really has me scratching my head is him not replacing bez.

We don't have many genuine wingers. Bruce is learning it, Levi is not really suited, Clugga is better mid. Marshall seems perfect.

Marshall can't replace Bez's role regardless in terms of defensive work and aerial ability. At that point it is really about how you choose to structure the rest of your midfield rotation and who plays wing as a result.

To be honest I dont think we have any other wing options who can replace Berry. All the rest are smaller and more offensive style (like Levi and Bailey).

The only one who could do it is Fletcher, which would require another small/medium defender into the team

I thought I was going easy using "Gun Shy' instead of something like "squibbing it" ........ because I agree with the bolded section above (or at least, that the Jury is still out on that).

I think you may be on the ball ........ given the selected squad (three defenders plus Tunstill - who has been training for a defensive roll - selected on the extended bench)

What do you mean by defensive work? He is the only other player in the squad with Berry's running power. So he can be that player running back on transition and being that 5m closer that can make a difference. To me that seems to be something we are missing a lot this year.

Anyway given Marshall is NOT playing, i hope we put Fletcher on the wing. He is well down on form at half back this year. And has a very good tank.

Although i guess that means even more shake-up for defence, given Answerth is out.

Oh I don't know

Still want Brain in. he is a natural defender.

McKenna has played a lot of defence.

Brain / Mckenna / Wilmot / Coleman? Would that work?

Anyone questioning his run defensively forgets his finals performance.
