Forgetting Sam Marshall

A bit surprised about the extent of speculation on Sam's future. I think the origin of this speculation is from Cal on Gettable suggesting clubs should look at him. Now Cal's coverage of the Lions' list and drafting seems to me to be semi-malicious and he also has a professional interest in boosting trade speculation stories. On Sam's supposed attitude, he strikes me as a very reserved (maybe shy) young man, in contrast to some of our extraverts (Kai, Darcy) and the media-ready players (Ashcrofts). He is a 20 year old who is good in traffic, has good vision, good hands (essential to our game), good tank for age and experience at the highest level. He did what he needed to do when prematurely elevated to finals. As to his performances in the VFL this year, when he is moved closer to the ball (off the wing), he has got plenty of it with effective disposals. He is a much better bet with further development than much of the forthcoming draft is likely to be. NB, I might be biased towards my fellow Sunshine Coaster.

Anyone questioning his run defensively forgets his finals performance.

The finals performances where he (understandably) was pretty anonymous and bez was there anyway to do the defensive running and work?

It's not just the ability to 'run defensively' I'm talking about - it is positioning and what you can contribute aerially. We deliberately didn't have him doing the defensive work on Dempsey and tried to have Cal and Bruce do it instead.

Marshall is an inside midfielder long-term and he's best suited to being a more attacking winger right now. At the moment that's not the role that has opened up and we can instead work Zac and Clug through there.

Prior to the Collingwood game it was suggested Tunstill would come in and play defence, but it didn’t happen. Played forward and apart from a couple of touches in the first quarter, including a strong mark, did next to nothing for the game. It would be interesting if he was played as a defender tomorrow, but I would have thought McKenna was included to play that role. Now that he’s been selected, we obviously want Tunstill to play well, but I don’t think “padding stats” in the forward line is the best way to use him. He has to line up on the wing and really make it his own. Tunstill keeps getting chances and he keeps underwhelming.

McKenna has been playing forward for some time now. I doubt he goes back into defense

It's interesting looking back on Sam's time at the Lions.
He's 7 rounds into his second season.
He was a first round selection in the 2024 draft, and our second pick after Levi (Ty Gallop was our 3rd pick in the third round at #42).

Sam played 11 senior games, including 3 finals and the Grand Final in his first season.

Given the phenomenal relationship building and people management skills of Fages and Danny Daly, there is absolutely no way that Sam has been 'forgotten'.
There will be massive input and support for Sam to continue his development at the Lions in becoming an elite AFL player.
They'll be keeping him fully informed of exactly where things are at with his development, progression and their selection decisions.

Getting games with the best team in the league when you are young and inexperienced is always going to be tough.
I really hope he makes it because he's obviously very talented.

You can say that again!

Has StKilda offered him piles and piles of cash?

It would explain why **** prickled about their offering others stupid payments.

Maybe he’s just spending a season building his craft and strength?

Who knows?

I'm hearing Marshall has 'things' to work on in his game and the best place to be doing it is the VFL.

No suggestion he has any offers elsewhere although that may change if we haven't put a contract on the table after the bye.

I only saw parts of today's game and he wasn't the same player I saw last time.

Overall there wasn't anybody there I'd be confident of taking the next step right now.

Does it set expectations more reasonably of we say Sam is a 2nd round pick? He was taken at pick 25.

I'm certainly no draft expert, but if we didn't match the bid on Levi as Father / Son at #5, would we have still taken Sam as our first picked player?

I imagine it all falls to when the bid on Marshall comes. We certainly wouldn’t voluntarily take an academy player with our first pick, we’d look for the double up. The question would have been if a bid came for Marshall before our regular pick and there was better players still on the table, would we have passed on Sam? All hypothetical, we’ll never know!

What is amazing… the 3 players we picked in the 2024 draft are all first year premiership players!

Fagan believes the code can "be mature" about the futures of players around the league, a mould which has been adopted by the NRL.

"Absolutely I would," Fagan said on SEN.

"We've got to be more mature about things. Okay, someone might think he's not going to be there next year, you'll be better off playing someone who will, but no"

I think people can probably scratch the "he's already out the door" line of thinking.

His body language around the group was pretty poor last night. Seems to be disconnected with the group whether that be because something has happened or he just hasn’t built any strong relationships, who knows?

Was going to take a photo of the group after they returned from HT and they were doing their stretches, whereby they hold onto another player. You can guess who the only player was who didn’t do that particular stretch can’t you? Obviously it probably means nothing, but watching it made me automatically think of this thread. 🤣

I think it’s almost certain he’s out the door at seasons end. Be interesting to see what he fetches in a trade. Wouldn’t be much you wouldn’t think even after playing in a flag in his first year.

I have no idea about the dynamics but Sam just doesn't look connected to the team in any way whatsoever. I did notice a couple of players give him some encouragement but he looks isolated.
