Stereophonics drummer found dead, age 40
Tue 8 Jun 2010
Stuart Cable, the former drummer of Welsh rockers Stereophonics, has been discovered dead at his home under suspicious circumstances.
The 40-year-old musician was discovered at his house at 5.30am UK time, with reports that he had been drinking the previous evening. Police have not yet revealed his cause of death. Cable helped form the “Dakota” outfit way back in 1992, before exiting in 2003 – after he was allegedly sacked for not being dedicated enough to the band. Despite the split however, the remaining members of Stereophonics had good relations with Cable, who bore his former bandmates no ill will.
Frontman Kelly Jones revealed to British newspaper the Daily Telegraph this morning that he recently sent Cable a text message just last week, wishing him a happy birthday. Cable had replied, “I never thought I’d make it to 40.”
“I’m in total shock,” says Jones. “It was about 8.30am and I was getting ready to go to my uncle’s funeral when Stuart’s brother, Paul, rang. I was going to see Stuart today for a pint and wish him happy birthday as well.”
“When people break up in bands no-one really knows what it’s all about,” Jones said of his split from the band. “But, between me and Stuart, all our disagreements were solved within one year.”
Cable’s latest outfit was called Killing for Company. In 2009 he released his autobiography, Demons and Cocktails – My Life with the Stereophonics. He is survived by his two children.
