I'm pretty sure it's a personality thing. Lewis is quick and he's got charisma and a high level of self confidence/arrogance that either brings the fans or the haters, there aren't many fans who sit in the middle. He's definitely in the Vettel/Alonso mold whereas Rosberg is more reserved and quiet, a bit like Raikkonen and that tends to polarise fans as well. So, is the onus not then back on Lewis to perform better & push? Nico seems to avoid the contact.
Not sure I understand the dislike for Nico on this forum. I think he's a fantastic driver and deserves all the success he gets. The luck he has received is exactly that, luck. It's not a conspiracy.
By the way, if you want to discuss luck, Lewis won a World Championship through luck in Brazil 2008.
