Theres so much stress about our forward line, including natural talent and contested marking, I relaxed and reassessed and now I'm more confident.

Mid:Mzungu Mundy Hill

HF: Fyfe Clarke Morabito

FF: Ballantyne Pavlich Mayne/Walter/Mellington/Crozier/Neale

Ruck: Sandilands Barlow DeBoer

Plenty of height/contested marking ability there and natural attacking smarts.

Obviously a lot of these players would also play through the midfield at times but it's still shaping nicely IMO.

All good teams have a player that can kick 6 goals+ or multiple players that kick 3-4 goals+ on a regular basis.

At the momemt we are managing 2 goals for key forwards and guys like Mellington and Pearce kicking 3 goals on occasion.

IT comes down to either delivery into the forward line, or simply talent to take grabs in the forward 50/ decent leads.

Pavlich is not looking like a natural forward at the moment. He rarely keeps his feet and seems to be after a free every time.

Ballantyne is the key for us. The unfortunate thing is his body seems to be prone to soft tissue injuries, so you almost expect him to spend some time out at one point. Fingers crossed this does not happen.

Yep Pav's form is somewhat the elephant in the room for us, although maybe a bit premature 3 games in. He certainly hasn't looked like the power forward we are used to. I hope he hasn't dropped too much weight for the full forward role he was dominating in a couple of years ago.

Seems to be a confidence issue to me. Or is he just out of form ala Brad Green?

I think zoning and presses will also make it harder for a guy like Pav (191cm or similar) to have the space to lead into. He hasn't been a great contested mark for a long time, so he needs that space.

The other talls in the forward line are learning to work together to maintain space, and improving the delivery from the midfield will go a long way to helping him rediscover his goal kicking form.

He'll be back.

Pav's probably out of form because he hasn't played a solid FF role in 3 years. Give him time.
Ive heard a rumour that the PAV has a niggle/injury and thats why Jack Anthony has travelled to Melbourne......would sort of explain his ordinary form from last weekend, where he struggled to get out of second gear.
Perhaps a track watcher like Salim could comment on his training this week ( or lack of it )

Please not this. We can't afford to lose Melington and possibly Fyfe and Pavlich in one game.

It'd be a strange world if Pav had to miss and Kep & JA turned into a world beating key position duo in the Saints game.

Some perverse part of me would actually like to see that. It'd be hilarious.

We've had some very good wins without Pav in the side in the past. It's almost like it makes the kickers going inside 50 to actually weigh up the options rather than just looking for Pav. Puts the opposition planning off too.

Yes I agree. Often in the past we I thought we seemed to play as well or better without him. This is not a reflection of his ability rather that too often we picked the same option going forward by always kicking to Pav. Opposition just had to use the double team to deal with the situation.

The introduction of multiple forward marking options is something I think many have hoped for but without fruition. If you are going to have a number of key forwards it is important I think to get value for them by occupying different space. I noticed a number of times in the last Geelong game Hawkins and Podsiadly were in the same area of the ground and marking contests. They were far more effective when out on their own.

Pack marking is low percentage unless of course you play us. Too many times this year an opposition dwarf has marked it in traffic because nobody from Freo effectively committed themselves to a spoil.

This

Apparently it is much harder for key forwards now due to the lack of space. See Roo last year. Pav has a double whammy of not playing their for 2 seasons.

It might take him sometime to find him Mojo but he's the only one in our team who can kick a suitcase of goals (bigger than a bag)

I really like how our forwardline might look tomorrow nite.

FF: de boer Clarke neale

HF: mayne pav ballas

Clarke can take a grab so can mayne,de boer and pav.

Solid forward pressure & tackling with ballaz, mayne,de boer and Clarke too.

neale and ballas both inject classy football. ballas, for all the criticism he gets for his kicking, delivers beautifully into the forward 50. ross said postmatch last week that our delivery into the 50 was an issue and the ins this week should go a long way to improving that.
