where do you think the club is, and where do you think the team is?
personally i think the club has moved forward, even though getting $1 mill returns in 04, 05,. i beleive the club is in a much more managable position, and i beleive the team has gone backwards. call it injuries or call it bad luck we have still gone backwards and good teams move on through injuries, do we lack depth? please give comments and thoughts!

Almost dead even I believe. As a team our standard has dropped but in regards to management forwards. We won't know until at least the end of the season to see whether Lyon > Thomas.

off field - forward
on field - backwards

Thing is we're still mainly the same team, no reason for our shitty performances so far.

Off field: We have made huge inroads on the better financed clubs. Other clubs have noted what we have done and used us as a template for their own off-field renovations. The good news is that we leapt forward from an untenable position, the bad news is that other clubs have parallelled us, and that some of the richer clubs have further innovated to go ahead again.

I will not be satisfied until we have a bricks and mortar world standard venue for training AND administration AND a social venue which earns the club money.

On field: We have improved, but several other clubs have improved more. The tactical side of football has changed. Sydney led the way with the possession game. Port Adelaide, Geelong, Essendon and now W Bulldogs all set about to change the way they played almost in direct response to the flood. They opted for speed and a sort of tidal flow of players to clog up opponents defence whilst trying to free up their offence. Geelong play on at all costs to prevent enough time to set up the defence. Hawthorn have been particularly scientific in the way they have recruited and have structured their playing style - another possession style game but with a zone defence that overwhelms opponent numbers to the contest. We have been more successful than most clubs against Hawthorn's zone defence (something now being adopted by other clubs), but we have seemingly not developed a strategically individualistic game plan - one that can readily be demonstrated as the unique style of the Saints. We do go in hard at the ball and the man with the ball and our rapid transfer of the ball to the forwards can be impressive. We simply do not bring this game to the table every time we play.

I will not be satisfied until we have a winning strategy that can readily be recognised as created and played by the Saints.

Once again Kildonian, excellent analysis of our current situation. I think both our off field and on field can improve tremendously from the move to Frankston. Though I say this with a heavy heart (I lived almost across the road from Moorabbin for many years), I think the facilities will be far better, and I think there is a certain mentality that is ingrained in the old building - that we are the poor club, struggling to survive. That persona has helped at times, but we need to shift into thinking we're the club that leads, that is at the cutting edge. Frankston will help with that.

We've defiantly gone backwards. New coach and a new game plan; the team has not adapted well. I just don't enjoy watching the Saints as much as I used to in 04-06. The fact that we don’t even have one representative in tonight’s game is an indictment. Having said that, I would rate Sam Fischer ahead of Nathan Basset who apparently is now playing tonight.

We’re 4-3 , we have a number of guys out of form so there's plenty of room for improvement. So here's hoping we don’t lose 4 in a row as per last year. Hopefully we can stay ahead of the ledger and perhaps have a really good second half. It’s a long season so maybe Hawks, Dogs might drop off. Also, if I hear that Richmond were unlucky to lose one more time I’ll…………………….

One area the team HAS gone forward in is its treatment of rookies. That is a forward looking thing.

I can never understand why a coach would bring Sydney's lock-down game with him in a side with 3 tall gun forwards. A good coach can adapt their game plan to the personnel they have, not a "one size fits all."

the ruck is so much better, but it seems you need 1-2 mids
that would give your forwards greater service

mate, i think you're getting warm ... i was at the saints-swans game in round 1 and couldn't believe what lyon did after you guys had smashed us in the first 10 minutes or so, got three goals up and then uber-flooded, like you were trying to defend the lead rather after 20 minutes rather than keep going playing the footy you'd been playing, and gone on to smash us
i think lyon is about to come under some serious scrutiny
you not only have some outstanding tall players, but also some creative mids and potentially outstanding running players, yet lyon seems determined to turn you into a hard, dour physical side, as so many have likened to sydney when he was there

A couple of weeks ago Riewoldt said that the players are told to play fast, attacking footy. Not the crap they're doing now. Why has it been such a struggle to do that when the previous game plan under GT was exactly the same?

Forwards in the off field department, but 1000 miles in the wrong direction on the field. We lack passionate players who put everything they got into winning.

We have gone backwards since 04,05 and 06.

I purely blame Ross Lyon. He is the head commander and has had ample time to address constant issues, but continues with his blant gameplan. Give Grant his money, and get him back coaching the darn side. Cant take this crap no more. Its not the side, we're not slow, every side looks "great" when their winning, and every side looks slow when their not. Fact is, the list is better than the 06 list, easily.

Season so far.

Saints v Syd - 51 to 49 = Won, but should have lost
Saints v Carl - 125 to 85 = Won, but should have won by more
Bulldogs v Saints - 125 to 87 = Lost
Saints vs Geelong - 94 to 136 = Lost
Saints vs Essendon - 123 to 87 = Won
Port vs Saints - 82 to 61 = Lost
Richmand vs Saints - 107 to 110 = Won, but should have lost
Saints vs Collingwood - 94 to 103 = Lost

Conclusion, lucky to be 4 and 4. Should be 2 and 6.

Next week is a loss, we're so far off its not funny, and Ross has had every chance to do something, heck, even the injury curse has given him a go.

In hindsight, Gehrig really should have stayed retired ...

I get the impression Rosco Lyon would have prefered that he stayed retired, but was over-swayed by the popularity of the playing group, and that is why they re-drafted him.

I don't think it's a good position for a coach to be in, if he simply drafts and plays older players, on account of sentiment ..

With St.Kilda, I think perhaps it's a situation where you have to take one step backwards, to go fowards ..
Armitage looks really impressive, but I suspect the Saints probably should try and draft/trade for a few more draft picks, and regenerate the list ..

I don't think the likes of Raph Clarke have much of a long term future at the club, past this season ..
I think the club (as in the past few years) should also stop drafting recycled players, although I admit King and Schinder have fitted in well, I don't think King has more then another year (past this season) left in him.

spot on with ross lyon, and the list is far better than 06, think about how the young gun players have developed now, we should be streets ahead of teams like richmonda and collingwood, yet we are losing and just winning to them...something needs to be done..i no a lot of ppl that wont be re-newing their membership if lyon is still around..thts not me personally but its facts..and stkilda need to adress that.

Long way backwards since 2005?

In 2005 we were capable of matching it with the top teams. This year we are no where near a top team and will replicate Carlton after winning the Wizrd cup...Bottom 8 finish for us gauranteed!

Backwards, part of the coaches job is to get the best out of the players,no one could sayRL and his assistants have achieved this.Recruiting has been average at best, game plan just doesnt suit our list ,and a apparent lack of passion are evident from then till present day
