Why not?

Why is it universally agreed (by the majority of Western countries) that a work week should be 5 days?

This precedent was set years and years ago and now everyone has to abide by this tradition.

In this day and age with technologies the Western World could afford to to reduce the working week to 4 days and add an extra day to the weekend.

Would people of this world be happy to sacrifice a bit of money for increased in lifestyle and have more time to themselves? Probably not. Greed and tradition would stop this from happening. Are there any other reasons why it couldn't be done?

Of course, everyone would have to do it otherwise it wouldn't work.

I know many people don't work 9-5 monday to Friday and work on weekends but if they work full time equivalent they could ideally work 20% less hours.

I can dream.

:D

If you live anywhere other than Victoria, next week is a 4 day week.

Some of us have to keep the country going........

They did this in France I think. Certainly went to a 35 hour week. Apparantly the thing to do is to have a Friday off, followed by a Monday off and thereby have a 4-day weekend every 2nd week.

Also there was a proposal by the ETU to have a working week of 4, 9-hour days. If the emploer was large enough they could roster enough people to be on site all the time, and the workers get a day off.

Haha. Funny, the other day we had a similar discussion while sitting around in my mate's house, went something like this:

Me: "Wouldn't it be cool if the school week was only four days long?"
Mate 1: "Yeah, we should protest about it."
Me: "We'd win."
Mate 2: "Yeah, but the moment we get a four day we'll start to demand to have Thursday's off as four days is too long to be at school, eventually leading to us not going to school at all."
Me: "Works for me."

True story.

Resuscitating an eighteen year old thread …

Have seen the four day week starting to be mentioned more and more. I was on LinkedIn the other week and noticed our MD liked a story about Unilever implementing it …

I’d love to do it even if it meant working an extra hour for the four days and being “available” on the fifth if the shizle hit the fan at work.

Organisations as a whole, especially since covid are relaxing working days to facilitate working from home/remotely, being able to see a doctor, work from home with a sick kid and generally dont pay much attention to Friday afternoons. Would a 4 day work make much difference?

I still need 5 days in my current role just to get through the workload and ensure deadlines are met but I have flexibility, need to work from home? No problem, need to leave early for whatever reason? no questions asked etc etc. Post covid work environment Im not sure how much a difference it would make.

Isn't the thing though that you work your 38 over 4 days instead of 5?

So "technically" the company is paying the same hourly rate?

I always liked the "min-week" concept. Work Mon, Tue. Wed off. Work Thur, Fri. Sat Sun off. You're never more than a day away from a day off, so you don't get too stressed out or pissed off from the rat races.

Can't see it being picked up too widespread though. Far too many Elons in the executive ranks.

Yes and agree.

I have heard this brought up here and there in the last 5 years.

Australia will only pick it up if a stack of countries start doing it first.

I presumed the same nunber of hours worked but heard of an example where they worked an hour extra a day so only 4 hours of the 5th day made up......[emoji2369]

Maybe I heard wrong

The way I read it, and it maybe different from company to company, it’s 100:80:100..

100 % pay, 80 % days, 100% effort/efficiency .. meaning you still get full pay for 7.5/8 hour days for four days but you work smarter more efficient to get all your work done.

I heard numbers the other day that companies who have adopted a 4 day working week have seen a decrease in sick days of around 37%.

I did 4/3 for 2 years in 2014/15, it's a great roster.

I could get my work done in 3 days I reckon....lots of stretching out work and pretending to look busy (easy to do now I mainly work from home)

In 2024 I am moving to Perth and going to do 4 day tuesday to friday work weeks in Kalgoorlie.

We have a few people who work four tens instead of five eights.

It works pretty well. If I didn’t work from home so much I’d probably do it.

The hospitality industry is already drastically short staffed so who is going to be available to work what is essentially another busy public holiday in pubs and restaurants every week to cater for it?

Sounds good in theory and if you wanted you could find a job to work 4 days a week.
However people want to work 4 days but get paid for 5. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it but it's not happening anytime soon

I'm all for it, but right now may not be the best time.

As technology makes us more productive, then the progression toward working less makes sense.

Unfortunately, right now, we have wages that have not gone up enough (for quite some time they have underperformed compared to capital) and QE induced inflation. The simultaneous remedy to these is increasing productivity. Shortening the work week across the board would make that hard.

Not to mention we also have a labour shortage at the moment.

We all understand that people cannot be equally productive 5 days in a row, on some of the days a person will do less. For example, if we had a 4-day work week from Monday to Friday and with a day off on Wednesday, then people would have the opportunity to rest more evenly, which would have a good effect on productivity. I could be wrong, but these are my thoughts on the matter.
