This year out forward line has been crazily bad, apologies Mitch Clark 29 goals 11 games

Our 4 next best goal scorers are Jones - MID, Howe -MID/FOR, Blease MID, Sylvia MID/FOR

OK so our next 4 highest goal scorers are Nathan Jones our best mid this year, stoked your kicking goals mate but we should have 5 other genuine forwards who are kicking as many or more goals than you......

Howe, great forward last year, less so this year, and he floats right up the ground on the wings ect, and he is our only other genuine forward contributor this season.....i would have been hoping for a 30 goal year from Howey

Blease, not so bad, has been playing in the mids, can rest foward and be dangerous, and only played half the year, but once again not one of our genuine forwards

Sylvia, known much as a HHF type, has been playing alot in the midfield this year, playing inside lately ect, another contender who isnt a genuine forward.

Ok so what happened i used to think we had to many forwards especially medium forwards, Howe, Green, Dunn, Petterd, Bate, Jurrah.......Howe the youngest and is the only one who has contributed.........

Imagine if we didnt recruit Mitch Clark.....also Watts i am a huge fan i love him playing down back atm, but really we are now relyingon Cook, who i really like as a player to come on and be that second tall target, or play big for Cloke. About Cloke, if anything the last month or so should have shown us that anything can happen and that we cannot work without a atleast one big forward in our side.

We also lack any type of small forward since wonna left, we have Lawrence but he has never and never looks like playing, when it seems simpleto find small types in amateur leagues, Siposs, Puopolo, Sadd, Milera, Callinan......

Ideally we would line up like this or similar

Sylvia ????? Howe
Jurrah Clarke Davey

The ??? can be Watts or Cook hopefully but really i dont know who i want to fill in this forward line for our current side, Jurrah may go to jail and Davey is on his last legs imo literally? wtf did out forward line go?

Martin in the immediate future....

What are everyones thoughts? we have no actual forwards options bare part timers when Clark goes down? and we have about 7 medium forwards with 50-150 games experience each......

To be fair, if Clarke and Jurrah were available with Green in form, we would be bemoaning our midfield. If we had everyone available and still had Aussie as a small forward, we would have quite a decent forward setup, I think.

Personally, I like Watts playing a Sam Fisher role down back, which is I think is much more suited to his personality than key forward.

With Clark playing and Sylvia, Howe, Petterd and Jurrah in form and rotating high, I think we are fairly close to a good forward line.

The only missing links are 2 good crumbing/defensive forwards and another tall (Martin, Watts, Cook and a few others might be this option soon).

Yes but will Petterd even get another contract? will Jurrah be in jail (i know it is a big what if), my point is we cant kick goals because atm we dont have many true forwards.

Cook should be one, as Watts although i like him down back.

But i am now thinking Dunn, Bate and Petterd will not make it after this year tbh

And sylvia who i love off the hff is playing in the mids becaus e we have nobody else too

of that list Howe and Clark are the only 2 that have made an impact (as forwards) sylvia and Jones are becoming goal kicking mids potentially which is great if we can get that second tall, and medium and 2 crumbers in the side...

Certainly the only 2 that are currently in form (and perhaps Sylvia).

I personally think Petterd is well worth keeping on (in the hope he builds some consistency), and even Dunn can play a depth role for another year or 2.

I think we have the makings with the exception of some ground speed.

We have been waiting for Petterd to come back on since he did his shoulder in 09.......and Dunn should be Depth and nothing else meaning imo that we only have 2-3 forwards out of 6

Just out of curiosity, where do demon fans see Jack Watts spending most of his footy career? Given the acquisition of Clark, now the drafting of Hogan, and the chase of Dawes. Seems like key forward spots are being filled by other means. Didnt see a better thread to post this in so bumped this old one..

I see him as a key forward from about age 24 onwards (start of 2015 season), so KPF for most of his career I'd say (provided he plays until 30+).

But I may be in the minority here.

Jack Gunston type forward role. Pops up for the occasional mark and converts with 80% goal kicking efficiency.
Look at their physical stats, Watts should be better. I think there's maybe something wrong with our development culture.

Jack Gunston
Born: October 16, 1991 (age 20)
Height: 1.93 m
Weight: 81 kg
Jack Watts
Born: March 26, 1991 (age 21)
Height: 1.96 m
Weight: 91 kg

I think Watts will be stationed down back for the foreseeable future. He brings the desperately kicking skills that all our other regular defenders (Frawley, McDonald, Garland, Riv, Bartram, Nicho, MacDonald) lack. I think Neeld seems to be implementing a standard three tall forward structure. 2 key targets and with the resting forward/ruck. If you assume that Mitch will be one of those key forwards and the relief ruck/forward will be Martin/Sellar then the other forward spot appears up for grabs. With Cook progressing at a snails pace in the magoos and with Hogan not able to play until 2014 just who will fill that second spot is unclear. If Neeld preferred Rivers up their to Watts even in Clark's absence this season that would suggest to me that he views Watts' best position down back.

I think a lot of it will depend on his physical development

Could be a swingman

People criticise the role he played in defense, but I thought he did it very well (and he often had an opponent as well)

He got out pointed a few times by smaller opponents (i.e. Dane Swan) but FFS Swan's a brownlow medalist, not exactly a slouch

yeah this is it Viney, if he can build strength as he says he needs to openly then he may move back up the ground, even in a BJ mould being versatile. He can continue down back happily imo taking the number of intersept marks he does and using the ball well.

Some people may be unhappy about him not being the KPF we all craved but now we have Clark and Hogan, even Fitz and Cook so Watts is 1 of 5 options and he can fill holes all over the ground so if he steps up again this year we will all be seeing a great player forward or back imo
