FORMER Socceroo captains Johnny Warren and Charlie Yankos were named yesterday in a task force of eight to consider and advise on the proposed new National Soccer League.
Reaction to the appointments was positive and Perth Glory chairman Nick Tana said he was excited by the development.
Tana was a leading critic of the old Soccer Australia regime and agitated for change.
"This is the news we have been waiting for and takes us another giant step forward towards reform and a secure, bright and exciting future for the game in Australia," he said.
Tana has embraced the Frank Lowy-led Australian Soccer Association team that has been in place since last month.
The task force will examine every aspect of the new league, to be run as a separate company operating under a licence issued by the ASA. Plans are for it to be in place for season 2004-05, though it could be the year after before it is up and running.
The group will examine the league's structure, its name, the criteria to be met by competing clubs, the best time of year to run the season and a timetable for implementation.
Members of the task force are Warren, Yankos, Andrew Kemeny, Cheryl Bart, Remo Nogarotto, Jack Reilly, Brendan Schwab and Stefan Kamasz.
Kemeny is a former chairman of Sydney City.
Bart is a director of Basketball Australia and the Women's National Basketball League and a former director of Soccer Australia.
Nogarotto, the last chairman of Soccer Australia before the Lowy era, was chairman of the NSL Commission, founding chairman of Northern Spirit and a former director of the NSW Soccer Federation and club Marconi.
Reilly, who represented Australia 35 times as a goalkeeper, is director of finance for VicSport. He is a former chairman of the Victorian Soccer Federation and inaugural chairman of Carlton Soccer Club.
Schwab is a busy behind-the-scenes worker for the Players' Association and was chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association. He is a member of the PFA advisory board and chairman of PFA Management Ltd.
Warren captained the Socceroos between 1966 and 1972 and played in three World Cup campaigns.
Yankos, one of Australia's most capped players, played in the NSL and in Europe.
Kamasz, the general manager of the National Soccer League, will be the task force secretary.
Tana said: "We heartily endorse the principle of the new competition being established as a separate entity operating under licence from the Australian Soccer Association."
