I signed with Collingwood in an in-principle agreement ... but they couldn’t do the deal with West Coast because they weren’t getting on too well.
I was backed into corner (with St Kilda) because they were either going to pick me in the pre-season draft and West Coast would have got nothing.
(On Blight) If you did your job he left you alone, which was perfect ... the less I had to do with a coach the better. He had some interesting techniques, but he’d be first to admit that he didn’t put the necessary time in. He was misguided on where the list was at. He was a ripper fella, but he was the wrong fit at the time. (We) knew that things weren’t right. Blight’s philosophy changed from week to week.
Everyone says (our big chance for a flag) should have been 2004 but I actually think it was 2005. Luck beat us really ... at three-quarter time we had six blokes who couldn’t walk.
In 2004 when St Kilda lost after winning 10 in a row ... Sydney told their blokes St Kilda wasn’t taking this seriously – “Gehrig was out on the piss on Thursday!” Which I had been, but I did it for the previous 10 weeks too! In the first two minutes of the game someone has hit me up and it’s gone straight through my hands and hit me on the head!
We never used to play well against Port because they’d have two players on each of us. They wrote “Darryl Wakelin – what a great player”, but they had two on each of us. Our midfield never adjusted to it.
I was very close to getting the sack. One was when me and Steve Lawrence stacked a car. I sort of had a love-hate relationship with Thomo.
(getting re-drafted) It was probably a bad idea ... I lost the feeling in my hands. I’d always been a one-touch player.
