Frawleys' coaching

I don't really care as to whether our coach talks with a drawl or not....I'm more interested in the game plan. The over-possession game plan we have had for the last 3+ years kills me every time. Especially when we don't have the skill to carry it off. 2004 is meant to be the year where we change the game plan to a more direct one. The clock is ticking......

1980? You mean the plan where the Ruchman taps a catch to the ruck rover who lays off a handball shepherd to running rover who kicks a long daisy cutter onto Richo's chest 35 meters out directly in front, who goes back and calmly kicks over the umpires hat ?

That plan?
Sounds good to me !! Let's order 20 a game.

:D drawl

Well that's what every other team manages to do.

Frawley is a good coach. He knows the game well. He has a good supporting staff.
The problem I see, especially after todays debacle against the saints is that the players play dumb football at times. Many times today, instead of playing long direct football they chopped around. We played long direct, smart football against Collingwood, but not for the last two weeks. A coach does not control what the players do on the field. The players need to support their coach and play the style and game he wants every week and then cocnsistency will happen. look at brisbane for that.

Brisbane did a lot of stupid things with a lot of the same players until Matthews got up there. Then they won 3 premierships.

A great coach can get an average team to play consistently at its best.

A great coach can get a good team to become a great team like Brisbane.

A poor coach like Frawley cant get the best out of his players.

No other team in the comp plays anything like we do when we start chipping the ball around
BECAUSE
No other team has a coach so lacking in basic
skill comprehensionas we do.

The problem today started at 1/4 time.
Spud had a chance to re-arrange the forward line after the loss
of Richo and totally fukked it up.
Until then the team were majorly playing on their own.

It was his structuring that led us to have no options up 4ward,
thus having to go sideways etc.

It was his structuring that saw negative defense tactics
such as a loose man down back.

I admire your loyalty Wajalla and dog but surely you're
not totally sold on this guy?

This is a perfect world scenario. I don't believe that the message is getting through to the players. As good a coach as Frawley is, and as you purport him to be, the players don't listen and are obivously confused by the message he is relaying to them. He needs to go. We will never achieve the consistency of Brisbane under Frawley. Good on the administration for standing by their man, what has it achieved? **** all.

The problem is that, if the coach keeps putting players behind the ball, there is no-one to go forward to. Plenty of times yesterday players got the ball and looked up to go forward, but there was nothing there so they had to go sideways or backwards.

There are a few problems with this gameplan of stacking the backline as I see it:
  • For every loose man we have in our defence, the opposition also have a loose player somewhere. If the opposition are on top, this means an extra attacking option for them.
  • It is physically taxing as players push back then must sprint forward if when we get the ball (and back again if we turn it over), so that players are exhausted by the last quarter
  • Because of the exhaustion, the opposition can kick a few goals at the end. So rather than avoiding a blow-out, it actually encourages one.
  • For the same reason, close games slip out of our grasp. Look how many close games we lost in the middle of last season.
  • It leads to a high possession game, which under persistant pressure increases the likelihood of skill errors and turn-overs.
