Brett Deledio won´t be in our next premiership window. We should do what the bulldogs did with some of their older guns and #freelidsy.

It´s best for him to get a shot at a flag for a team like Hawthorn and best for us because we will get a good pick before he just fizzles out over the next couple of years and retires.

And I know this won´t be popular lol

I love Lids and this is why he needs to be let loose.

Are we discussing this again? OP is right , but nobody at the club has the brains to think of it or the balls to execute it . Just surround him with more Hunts Townsends and Moore types and he will retire like Newman with a blank canvas and we will replace him with a Yarran or a Chris Knights type.
That's my say on it.

He doesn't want to leave... I know its difficult for supporters to grasp, but some players are happy playing for the same club even if it means no premiership.

Yup. There are so many classy players who never achieve a premiership. It is an honor to win one not a privledge. I'm tipping he'll stick with us like some of the Richmond legends before him did. Besides he's still got 3-4 years if we manage him well and longer if we're extremely lucky. There is every chance he could see one at the tigers and if not he'll have mentored the next group of Richmond players for success. I've said it before but him and Jack are incredibly loyal to the club and are exactly the players we need teaching our young guns.

Either will Cotch, Jack, Rance. ...do we get rid of them as well? ?

Nah you need a strong middle aged group at AFL clubs to lead the younger guys. Clubs like St Kilda have pretty much launched back ahead of us in terms of time to next premiership by getting rid of guys like Dal Santo, Mcvoy for the right value. Did they therefore have to sack every single person over 26...don´t think so.

What a great idea for a thread. Haven't seen this discussed at all around these parts.

Oops, didn´t realise any content raised in previous threads meant a new thread talking specifically of one player about one issue wasn´t allowed. I guess if I was going for the creative thread of the year award id be pretty upset right now....but....I.....wasnt! :fearscream:

Look at all the doctors and fortune tellers on this board, who know exactly how long Lids has left. No one knows.

What I'm pretty sure of is Lids will play as long as he can. He genuinely loves playing the game. He's 29, with an Achilles issue that needs to be managed. As long as it can be, he will play on. That could be two years, it could be eight.

Yeah let's trade :

-a player that doesn't want to leave
-a player that has shown us incredible loyalty
-a player that we can't win without
-a player that we would get **** all for in return
-a player that could potentially player for another 5 years

with good drafting no current team is more than 3-4 years away from the flag.

He shouldn't absolutely go, but he can't be untouchable... it's amazing how when the superstar player leaves a club, how the old club seems to be able to grow as a result (Ablett, Franklin, Dangerfield, Griffen... to a lesser extent Malceski). If these guys can leave, then it is ridiculous that lids cannot. Basically the only players that should be untouchable are the young promising players who with so much development left in them are impossible to price.

All the guys - except Griffen - you've quoted wanted to leave...most of them chasing $$$$$

Spot on. Some supporters just don't get it. He's a true clubman. Like Dale Weightman and Matty Knights. These guys are a rare breed in modern footy. Sometimes it's not just about pure business or selling your sole just to win a flag. Some of us love the journey just as much as the destination.

I'd like a Richmond player to hit 300 games. Knights was robbed of the opportunity by Spud. Wallace played Richo when he was injured, resulting in a more serious injury, leading to retirement and the fans being robbed of that milestone. Campbell retired just short. Lids is the one now.

241 games to this point. Three more seasons will hopefully see him there. Leaves 10-15 games for injury and "management".

If he wanted to go, you'd let him. But he's a club champion and was one of the few reasons I watched for years. You treat players like that with respect.

There are some players you just don't trade. Melbourne found that out when they got rid of James McDonald. Lids and Jack are untradeable because you cannot replicate what they have and they both genuinely love the place. You can't draft that sort of character in. You trade someone like Lids and you lose more than just a gun player.

Few more:

- A player who is a fantastic role model to the young players. He lives and breathes footy, ultimate professional who takes it very seriously.
- A player who is yet to have a bad season. His most purple patch was arguably during 2009, he still went on to win the JD medal and narrowly missed AA.
- A player who despite three (arguably four) consecutive injury interuppted season starts is still among the best in the comp.
- A player who is undoubtedly elite as a half forward, as a half back and as a midfielder. Good luck trying to plug those holes without him.

Fancy putting a player like him up as bait, not a good look and wouldn't fill the young players who want to be tigers for life with much confidence.

I don't think Lids will be around for a Richmond flag or even a genuine chance at a Richmond flag, but if we push him out then I'm done.

McEvoy is still only 26. In return they got Savage and pick 18 (Luke Dunstan)

Dal Santo got them pick 25 which they traded for Billy Longer.

I reckon they'd be better if they managed to find a way to hold onto McEvoy and Dal Santo.

The piece of business they helped the Saints out the most that season was flicking pick 40-something for Josh Bruce.

There are just some players that it would make you sick to the core to see running around for another club.
Lids and Jack are those players.

I respectfully disagree that Brett Deledio can't be apart of our next Premiership team/window.

He may not end up doing so, but you're essentially writing off Richmond for the next 4 years, which is crazy.

Look at our opponents tonight, the Bulldogs. Nobody had them being even close to a premiership as recently as 2014, yet here they are, a legit Top 4 contender not 18 months later.

Geez Tiger fans are quick to write their team off.
