Is it no coincidence that both Hudson and Welsh went to a club bereft of success. Doesn't that say something? Think about it.

Both players like to have a real good time and yes they will be missed but life moves on and we will be better with our youngsters. Neither Hudson or Welsh would ever be the keys to getting the next flag.

Like this post, Hudson now we have lost Biglands may leave a bit of hole, but Welsh was never a match winning forward, he kicked alot of junktime goals but doesnt have the ability to turn a game on its head.

'junktime' goals often ='d matchwinning goals ...(at least 2 games last yr alone the 'silent assassin' kicked 2-3 goals in the last qtr whilst the game was in the balance. and im not sure what you really expect from a medium sized forward..how many of them in the league can 'turn a game on its head'?

in an ideal world we wouldnt have lost welsh. as other have noted he was our only real class forward in many respects. however injury and lack of dedication and professionalism has ultimately cost him in this case. if fit should kick 40 for the bullies this year

for a lot of people losing Hudson was the secret to not winning the 2005 flag.

Ah yes but it's now three years and 1 knee reconstruction later.

fair it is 3 years later. but its a but stupid to be suggesting he's not a player of sufficient quality to make a difference to a premiership run, when he's a far better player now than he was then.

I think we should see what influence he has at the Bulldogs. It is at least three years since they had a decent ruckman, so his influence should be obvious.

Personally, I lean toward him being more "solid" than "top quality". But we'll certainly see who's right in the short term this year.

Hudson is a pretty Ordinary ruckman and he will prove it this year.

Did you say that when he played with us? The man was 3rd in the AFL for hard ball gets.... so while he may not have actually tapped the ball down, he sure as hell tried to rove it. Yours sounds like a "sour grapes" kind of opinion rather than one of reality.

I think we all know how hard he worked in the ruck for us (and like you say, anyone who says otherwise is a "but stupid" - I never knew you were a kiwi btw ;) :D). What he lacked in natural talent he made up for in guts and determination. There's no doubt in my mind though, that a knee reconstruction puts a limit on how much G & T he can show and for how long. He'll be good for the Doggies (as long as he can stay fit) for the sheer reason alone of them not having had a solid ruck division for a while.

I believe the report of Roo who the missed the first final, cost us the 2005 Flag. I believe with him in the team we would have beaten the Saints and played at home in the Preliminary Final not away in Perth.

Yes, Hudson was 3rd in hardball gets but he could barely get off the ground last year.

I would like to know what players and supporters mean by 'Playing with Flair'.
Would a player that complains he is not allowed to play with flair means to say:- I'm not allowed to run to the left instead of the right. Or, I'm not allowed to kick for goal from 60 meters just because I can only kick 40 meters max. Or (the one I like best) " I tried the impossible and it came off once. So why shouldn't I try it again. I know the last 12 times I tried it I messed it up. So What?? It looks really good when it comes off!"
Do all you supporters that think like Rucci, and believe that NC stops players from playing with 'Flair', really believe that it would be better if the club allowed 18 players to do their own thing on match day?

I tell you what I think flair is. Flair is being able to do extraordinary things on a regular basis. Knowing when you can do it and when you shouldn't attempt it. Flair is being able to take the ball from a back pocket and run with it the length of the field, deliver it with precision to your attack or score a goal yourself, a la BUNJI, and not, tuck the ball under your arm run with it for 20 odd meters and get caught holding the ball 4 out of 5 times, a la Mattner.

Now, I don't think NC stopped McLeod's natural flair at any time, but, I'm sure he tried to curb Mattner's 'flair' after the first 2-3 seasons.

Now, I cannot prove any of the above:o, but I'll be happy to read any comments to the contrary.:)

spot on I agree with erverything you said

Always interesting to what a drama unfold...Welsh leaves and then says that there was a lack of fun at AFC, however, if the dour fun police had offered him two years of no fun he would have stayed, but one year just wasn't enough makes sense?

I'm glad the crow hierarcy stood there ground it would have been disastrous for the club .... because it would have held our youngsters back even further.....its early days yet but with what I saw thus far we have a great bunch of young lads coming through

Wow 3rd in the AFL for hardball gets, amazing.

How about hit outs?

Its all well and good that after losing a hit out he attempts to take the ball off the first midfielder that gets it, but I was under the impression that the true measure of a Ruckman was their hit outs to advantage at centre bounces and other stoppages.

And yes I did think that when we had him, he was the best we at the time, but that doesn't mean he was "top quality" it means he was the best of an ordinary ruck division and nowhere near the top ruckmen in the AFL.

geez its one thing to be a poor judge, its another to boast about it from the tree tops. :D

Ok, explain in detail why Ben Hudson is a top quality ruckman?

Damned if you do, and damned if you don't!

Clarke was CRUSIFIED for his lack of general field play but he was without a doubt THE best pure, tap ruckman during his time with us. So now that Hudson didn't win the tap outs, he is not good enough either. I am afraid we can't have it both ways!

Yes he did stuff around the ground, and it was decent, but so was his ruckwork. He was/is a decent ruckman but nothing extraordinary and certainly not in the region of the Top AFL ruckmen.
