CAREER MODE
Career Mode is fine as a playable version but needs to be have more things in the manager side of the game that effect the club. I believe that this will help prolong the longetivity of the game.
START OF CAREER MODE
At the beginning of Career Mode you will be taken to a screen were you enter your coaching details. You will enter information like your name, age, place of birth and status in the game. With this part you can chose stuff like legendary State player, legendary AFL player or Serviceable throughout his career. Next you will go to a screen where you have the option to continue with your current list of coaches or change them. You don’t have to change them all only the one’s you want. If you decide to change them you will go to a list of people without a job and people who are working at other clubs but are interested working at your club. So for people without a job there would be James Hird, Michael Voss, Nathan Buckley, Mark Ricciuto, Luke Darcy and Jason McCartney etc… You are also able to change your list of coaches at the end of each season. It is up to you what positions that you want these people to hold but you will be able to see what coaching position that these people would be best suited to. Just remember that you also have a budget and the people that you chose and how many you chose will affect this budget. The Positions available will be Assistant Coach, Strength and Conditioning Coach, List Manager, Skills Coach, Recruitment Officer and Administration Staff.
Assistant Coach
The Assistant Coach is your right hand man. You are able to put them in charge of training if you don’t feel like doing it yourself. At the completion of each training session and after every game played, your Assistant’s will give you a report of how the raining session/game went and if anybody has picked up any injuries. Your Assistant will also provide you with the top 5 possession getter’s from your team after each game and who is running hot etc… The higher the level of your Assistant Coach’s the better the players will respond from the Assistant taking control of training.
Strength And Conditioning Coach
The Strength and Conditioning Coach is in charge of all the physical requirements of the game, from injury management, to injury prevention. Your Strength and Conditioning Coach will also provide you with tailor made programs for your players over the season. You, the Coach are able to change these programs if you please. The higher the level of the Strength and Conditioning Coach the more resilient your players are to injury and the better they recover if an injury occurs.
List Manager
The List Manager is in charge of all player contracts and total revenue spent by the club (budget). Your List Manager is really important during Trade Week, as he is the person who conducts the deals with other clubs. The higher the level of your List Manager the easier deals will be done between your club and others.
Skills Coach
The Skills Coach is in charge of all players’ skills from kicking to contested marking. The higher the level of your skills coach the better your players skills will become.
Recruitment Officer
The Recruitment Officer is in charge of scouting potential draftees and giving you adequate feedback on players and approximately where they will go in the draft. The higher the level of the Recruitment Officer the more accurate the information received will be.
Administration Staff
The Administration Staff is responsible for promoting the club and getting more people to attend your games. The higher the level of the Administration Staff the more well known your club becomes and the more people attend your games.
INCREASING THE LEVEL OF YOUR STAFF
To increase the level of your staff you will use money. The amount of money that your club has depends on how wealthy your club is. So a club like Collingwood would have more money than a club like Carlton or Melbourne. Also you earn weekly money from the attendances at your games, items brought from the club shop and Sponsorship. The amounts of money that you have you are able to spend on your coaches. Each level increase costs more money but the higher the level your coach is the better your team will become.
TRAINING IN CAREER MODE
Training in Career Mode can be more in depth than it currently is. I believe that there should be three sections involved in training. These are Team Training, Group Sessions and Individual Sessions. Here players improve there overall rating depending on how well they respond to the training. A midfielder is going to respond better to clearance work than a forward would and vice versa.
Team Training
Team Training includes skill drills, speed exercises, Aerobic/Endurance work, Match practice, weights, goal kicking, post match recovery, post match reviews and pre match planning. You have 150 minutes and have to distribute the points evenly. But you have three training sessions a week so in total that is 450 minutes per week of training. Each training session can be something different if you like or you can continue to do the same thing.
Group Sessions
Group Sessions involve specific players from specific groups. Like the forwards do forward training etc… The Ruckman will focus on tap/hit outs and marking, the Backs will focus on defensive drills and zones, the Forwards will focus on offensive drills and goal kicking practice and the Midfield will focus on midfield drills and clearance drills. Each session will last for 30 minutes and you can chose wether you want to do 1, 2 or 3 Group Sessions a week.
Individual Sessions
Individual Sessions last for 150 minutes so you have to distribute the time evenly between the following factors, skill drills, speed exercises, Aerobic/Endurance work, weights, goal kicking, post match recovery and post match reviews.
NEWS DESK
A News Desk should be included in the game. This is were your Assistant Coach will provide you with feedback from training and after a game. Also tis is were you will find out about injured players or information to do with football. For instances you could be informed that Russell Robertson is not happy about his current contract and is looking to move elsewhere etc… Also this is where you will receive information about local leagues in your area. So if I was coaching in SA I would receive info about the SANFL and vice versa. You will receive weekly results, ladders and who is dominating in your local competitions. Also you will be informed of who wins the best and fairest of the competition from your local league.
SCOUTING
Scouting possible players can occur throughout the whole year. You will be able to scout four players each week. You can only scout a player a maximum of three times. After you have scouted a player information like ‘this defender always thinks to spoil first’, ‘can be a ball magnet’ and ‘gets in and wins the hard balls’ etc… Obviously this is the strengths of the players. For weakness’s you could have ‘does not kick regulation goals’, ‘outmarked by most players’ and ‘can’t find team mates at stoppages’ etc… After scouting a player your scout will also give you an estimate of were they think the scouted player will go in the draft. You will be able to see the name, height, weight, position, club and state were all players are from.
TRADE
The current trading system in AFL games is boring and unrealistic. You often see top players from opposition clubs get transferred. For instance Matthew Pavlich leaving Fremantle and going to Adelaide for pick 70 and a fringe player that nobody wants. IMO the trading system should run for 5 days and there are morning and afternoon sessions on each day of trade week. Each day you are aloud to make 5 bids for any individual player whilst at the same time you also receive bids for players in your team. Your team and other teams do not have to get back to you straight away, sometimes a deal can take 3 or 4 days to be finalised. This simulates what would happen in real life
Also, you can enquire about players from other clubs. This does not require you to use up one of your 5 bids for the day, so you are entitled to make as many enquires as you want. The clubs of the players that you enquired about will get back to you A.S.A.P. and will tell you what they want for that player. For instance they would say that this player would require a high draft or middle to low draft pick. Clubs can also class players as ‘Untouchable’. After you have finished the morning part of trading to will press (proceed) and the go to the afternoon session. Here you can receive more offers from opposition clubs or you can make more offers for other players. Also trades from the morning session can also be confirmed.
All clubs have the ability to change trades. For instance if I was in charge of Fremantle and Adelaide wanted Matthew Pavlich and they offered me Chris Knights and draft pick 22, I have the option to resubmit there offer to them. I know that Adelaide have draft pick number 3 and I want draft picks 3, 22 and Chris Knights for Matthew Pavlich. My improved offer will go back to Adelaide and they can either chose to except my offer or change it again. You can also try to do deals with more than one club for the same player.
At the beginning of each of the two sessions on trade days there will be a section called NEGOTIATION HISTORY. This is where you can go back and look at all the offers that you have made for players and offers that you have received for players. An indicator tells you how close you are to signing a player. The more easier it is to sign players depends on the level of your List Manager.
DUMP TRADES
Like I mentioned above with Mathew Pavlich going to Adelaide for pick 70 and a fringe player, dump trades happen frequently in AFL games. One way that I have thought of to fix this is by using the player rankings.
AFL DRAFT, PRE-SEASON AND ROOKIE DRAFT
At the completion of each season it is your decision to decide wether or not to keep your rookies or not. The amount of rookies that you delist will mean the amount of spare places that have been made available on your clubs rookie list.
The AFL Draft, Pre-Season and Rookie Draft are essential parts of the AFL and should be included in any AFL games. These drafts will be conducted at the completion of the Trade period.
