Hi Tiges,

Was looking at some stats for Cotchin today and saw that hes 18yrs3mths old. While he has only played half a season, already he has 'future captain' written all over him. This got me thinking, Kane Johnson is 30, lets say he plays until he is 33 and retires at the end of 2011. By then, Cotchin would be 21. Would the club, and would you guys want the club, to make Cotchin captain there and then, or would the club be more likely to do what West Coast did back when Cousins was 21/22, ie get some older players to take on the role for a while to let Cotchin develop.

Obviously this is all hypothetical, he still has only played 10 games, but you guys will be in an interesting situation in 3 years time if he is still as highly regarded then as now. The other option would be for Deledio/Foley to take on the role, but if that was the case, its likely Cotchin would miss out all together?

If Johnson retired the end of this year, who would Captain next year?

I highly doubt that a) Johnson will play til 33 and
b) will be captain even next year,
so its all highly speculative.

I believe that Newman will be "fill in" captain for 2-3 years, before Deledio/Foley takes over.
By the time Cotchin gets to 25, and if hes any good both as a player and a leader, Foley/Deledio should/might hand it over to him depending on the circumstances, but I dont think Cotchin is the next captain of Richmond :):thumbsu:

I think the club is more qualified to know who has the best qualities to be the next Captain.

1. Leadership-- can sometimes be not visible. players like Johnson set the example by setting high standards on the track and behind closed doors. Other captains like Carey can lift players around him by inspirational performances.

2. Courage- no use asking players to go in hard if you dont.

3. Respected- Amongst the playing group.

4. Strong resolve- Maybe someone with a tough back ground, not spoon fed. Someone who has strived to be the very best he can whilst not being overly blessed with Talent. Micheal Tuck.

5. Durable- hard to think into the future but it's nice to have your captain on the park. ie. Nietz

6. loyalty- having a HIGH regard to the club and jumper.

7. Experience- Being able to guide younger players through tough situations.

8. Ability- No use having a player with all the above qualities without having the ability to get on the park. ie. Vandenberg

We have a few players that tick the above criteria. The one that stands out most for me is Nathan Foley.

Great post , Newman is an absolute pro but Foley is angrier and expects more out of himself and his team mates. Definately the one. Cotchin to go next after Foley

i think the coachin staff will be best placed to make the decision as we mainly know about players on feild performances. like a few years back when i had work experience at tigerland i found joel bowden to have great leadership qualities. everytime he talked everyone would listen.
but from what i can c Foley is most likey to become next captain. but i would definately love to c Deledio Captain even at his young age i think he has a good head on his shoulders

Newman would fit the bill as well. Looks already a leader and would be a good choice as well. But I like Foley, ex Rookie, Hard NUT and can inspire with some great work out of the Centre.

Great list above, it is pretty accurate because Kane Johnson ticks all those boxes (accept the last one is only half ticked...)

Nathan Foley is our man.

Deledio may have the qualities required too, and despite being a #1 draft pick ("spoon fed") his teammates are inspired by how hard he works on the track.

Lids is 2nd only to Foley when it comes to training your ass off, so both are worthy.

Apparently Rance has very good leadership qualities. I'm not saying he will be our next captain though; he hasn't even made his debut.

Does leadership include Captains who miss 2 vital goals in the last quarter when his team depended on it. (Suga, last round)
Johnson doing crap off-field as a leader, doesn't give you 4 points.
The game's not played behind closed doors.

Don't mention Johnson in the same paragraph as Carey.
Carey makes Johnson look like he won his Captaincy in a 'Lucky Dip'.

I rang SEN after Lids second game and told spud he would captian our club one day and i stick by it.... An amazing player, I feel a great leader on and off the field..... ( Just needs to keep his head off those Gay looking banners for the Matrix Men).... Not that there is anything wrong with that.

After seeing him cop the hard tags this year, i have no doubt in my mind Foley should be the next captain. Leave Lids to develop his game even more and be the star that he should be...Foley i see as being the one who works his ass off, will rally the troops and not afraid to tell players how it is.
Also, scrap the #17 for captain...just retire the jumper and let Foley captain in #41!

Next up: Brown, Bowden, Newman
