Has anyone else been to see them play yet?
I saw them play in Melbourne last night and thought it was tops.
John Petrucci was great to listen to but really isn't a showman. Mike Portnoy behind the skins made up for that though, he was plenty entertaining to watch.
Steve Vai is completely opposite to Petrucci. He (and his support players) are real showmen but I really don't enjoy his music as much. As my mate descibed him, it is more like 'guitar art'. One song sounded like everyone was playing different tunes at once.
Joe Satriani was fantastic. He both sounds fantastic and is good to watch. His rendition(?) of Always with you, Always with me with Vai and Petrucci entering in during the middle of the song was brilliant, the highlight of the night.
On a side note, felt kinda sorry for the rhythem guitarist (as sorry as you can for someone touring the world and getting paid for playing guitar!). He just seemed to stand over to the side in the shadows, all lonely-like while the lead boys were out in front and the bass player was over hanging around with the drummer.
Overall, it was thoroughly enjoyable and at 4 hours long, pretty good value for $100.
