I arrived back from Brisbane this morning and was lucky enough to be at the game on Saturday night. Walking to the Gabba, I was surprised to see how many Carlton supporters were in my vicinity, easily out numbering Brisbane supporters. Of course, once I entered the stadium it was obvious that the majority of the stadium were filled with lions supporters however, behind the goals on the Wellington end where I sat, were thousands of supporters which covered the whole section in Navy blue. Many who I spoke to had made the trip from Melbourne that day and would leave that night for working committments (talk about loyalty!) As the anthem was coming to a close and the navy blue faitful sang those last few words, came that crescendo that can only be experienced in finals. Gosh it was good to be back!
Then came the game... The roar after the first couple goals could have been heard from miles away, especially after that Kreuzer bomb from 45-50
Massive hi-fives and hugs after each goal, it was a euphoria! Everytime the Brisbane fans tried getting their team back into the game with chants of 'Brisbane' it would be responded with louder chants of 'CARLTON'.
Unfortunatly the lions starting pressing with a few goals and led at half time which put a bit of doubt in our minds, but our doubts were soon eradicated as we raced to a 4 goal 3 qtr time lead.
After Clokes goal, we were all going bonkers! Every carlton supporter around the ground was off their seat and cheering for what we thought was a guaranteed win. Unfortunatly though against massive odds, that would be our last goal of the game and of course, the year.
Theres no reason for me to go into the last quarter as that's all pretty self explanatory but as upset as we all where, wasn't it was fantastic to see such a gallant performance. It's such a shame that the 10 minutes the boys drop their tempo and intensity is during the most pivotal part of the game, I guess you win some and you lose some. But we will be back in 2010 bigger and better than ever! It can only be said that the inclusion of Waite and Jamison would have gone a long way in stopping the run of Brisbane, so I am certainly looking forward to them returning next year
It was dissapointing yes and it's gonna take a lot of us a few weeks to get over this loss, but it's time we look forward to next year. And lastly, if you're gonna miss barracking for a team this week, always remember that every carlton supporter has 2 teams. Carlton of course being one of them and the team that is playing against Collingwood, so on that note Go crows!
