Well it had to happen, Nintendo has dropped the price to $329 now for when it goes on sale on May 17.
Now I have to decide when i shal pick this up,as I'm getting the XBOX on Friday, might now also get the Gamecube when it launches.
This has actually been taken from Gamecube Europe as the Australian Nintendo site hasn't updated the news yet from a few days ago.

22 April 2002 - Nintendo Australia today announced that its ground breaking new console, NINTENDO GAMECUBE, will launch on 17 May at a suggested retail price of $329.

This new price is part of Nintendo’s commitment to offer the consumer an unbeatable value proposition. Nintendo will bring the NINTENDO GAMECUBE to market at the best possible price so consumers can feel confident they are getting the best deal at launch.

“We are committed to making NINTENDO GAMECUBE a success in Australia. On May 17 we will offer consumers the only dedicated video games console available, with an outstanding software line up both at launch and throughout 2002.

“With our outstanding product quality, coupled with a competitive price, we believe NINTENDO GAMECUBE offers unparalleled value for the consumer that will ensure our success in the Australian market,” says David Yarnton, Director of Sales and Marketing, Nintendo Australia.

“Consumers have already reserved and pre-paid a deposit for thousands of NINTENDO GAMECUBE’s nationally. Based on existing reserved copies and given we are three weeks until our launch and pre-orders rise exponentially, we expect pre-orders of 10,000 or more by May 17,” he said.

Nintendo has committed 50,000 units of NINTENDO GAMECUBE to Australia for the launch month with an estimated 200,000 for 2002. Day one will also see the most impressive and extensive line-up of software titles ever seen for a console launch, with over 20 software titles available, growing to over 50 titles available by the end of the year.

Nintendo has shipped approximately 4 million NINTENDO GAMECUBE hardware to Japan and North America by the end of March 2002. NINTENDO GAMECUBE launches in Australia on May 17 at a suggested retail price of $329.

cheers Lethal

I saw that yesterday but wasn't sure how reliable the source was. Looks like the war is really on now.

Come on Sony.........we're waiting........

Sonys going to have to do something now, they'll have to drop it to at least match the Gamecube.

Isn't it great how we are finally getting a price war between the consoles:D

It's fantastic. :D

It's just a shame the Dreamcast had to die. :( (not that it was ever alive over here to begin with....)

Best console ever.

I think Sony will drop to $299. My guess is that they'd be able to build the PS2's cheaper now (older parts etc) so the loss on each console sold would not be nearly as much as it used to be.

$299 would see a hell of a lot of people buy PS2's.

I still applaud Microsoft for being the first company to give a toss about Aussie gamers.

Now they'd better not go and screw that up by signing an exclusive deal with Telstra to provide the service for their online games. I hope they give us the choice of choosing between Optus and Telstra.

gPhonque, do you know what the recommended retail price is for the Gamecube in America and Eurpope now? I read somewhere that the Australian Gamecube will be the cheapest in the world now.

Yeah, I know. A few people on the Messageboards on American sites aren't happy that us and Europe are the ones getting the drops in price.......oh well.....stiff:D :D

Yeah, about time we get to duck in before our American counter parts. Looks like this is the first time Australia has had a better deal than our American friends!

The consumer is the clear winner of the "console wars".

I originally put down a deposit on the Game Cube bundle at EB which cost $600. Since then, I've had another free game added to the package (to compete with the ToysRUs deal) and now there will be a $100 price drop.

Anyone else who is getting a Cube, make sure you've got some cash saved for when Eternal Darkness comes out.
And Resident Evil.
And Smash Bros.
And Mario.
And Metroid.
And .........
