I was very surprised that Gumby was named, given he had been in the modified group right up until the match. From an "outsider", it seemed a very silly risk. I hope it's not too bad and they really (really, really) nurse him back gently next time.

I thought Dyson was just OK. Definitely an improvement but still looks panicky and, imho, a long way short of the required standard. Disposal was very ordinary (loopy, hospital handballs. Had the lowest effectivess for the Bombers, with 64%)... but it's early days, and at least he was amongst it. I thought he also put in a short step on occasion.

Speaking of short steps... Saw the Houli "squib" late in the game and was not pleased, but am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. (Even Hird did one very early in his career). Hopefully, one of the coaches or senior players takes him aside (and maybe show him the replay). He'll learn from it and I'm confident that won't become an issue for him. He sure knows how to find the pill, has improved confidence and will continue to improve dramatically with every minute out there. I hope he's given a good run in the 1's early as he's a class act!

Wow! Lots to be excited about. Nash, Houli, Dempsey, Hille (!!!), Laycock, Hocking, Pev, Monfries, Nat-Rat, Reimers, Magin & Mal all showed some great signs. Everyone looking fit. Playing a very direct and exciting brand of footy. Great defensive pressure. Good blocking (When did you last see that from the Bombers?!? :thumbsu:). Skills definitely improved, Great run from defense and through the guts... All the youngsters getting into it.

I really enjoyed watching the match. As supporters, we're gonna get good value this year, regardless where we end up. I'm pumped for the Doggies, let alone the season proper!!! Bring it on!!

Shades of '93!! ;) :D :thumbsu:

For **** sake it is a practice game. Calling him a squib is plain stupid.

Which incident was it? I missed it.

If it is the one I'm thinking it happened with 12 minutes to go when there was a 50/50 contest with the Brisbane player being closer to the contest, so he slid in against Houli.

If Houli did fully commit he maybe seeing the same surgeon as Malceski.

Being a NAB Cup game I'm not looking too much into it.

Cant seem to remeber it either. What i do remember is that in the first or second quarter, he ran through and roved the rap beautifully and that he won a lot of the ball. Star in the making
I remember that exact tap. It was beautiful to watch. Should be in the best 22 by seasons end. Get Johnson and Peverill out of there. I would have expected Dempsey to play in the midfield. Was very effective off the half back. Hoping for Reimers to get more game time, but mostly I am looking to see Hislop get a game.

Cant remember it, but not what I want to hear. Wwill be watching him even closer next game, but I expect to see a bloke trying to make the most of his opportunity, going in hard and winning the pill. Because that is what I saw of him last Saturday. Go Bashar.

Wait, was that Proud who slid in? If its the contest im thinking of, i dont blame him, could've been polaxed, the other player went in hard

On Dyson, I haven't seen the NAB match yet (still downloading it), but it sounds a bit like Winda from 2006. In that year he was starting to get the ball, but used it very poorly. The main reason I still wrote him off. However, in 2007 he proved me wrong and started to get the ball even more AND use it pretty well.

Maybe Dyson will do the same. But its going to be interesting to see how Dyson goes. In my view when the senior players are back in there are about 5 spots open for the likes of Pev, JJ, Dyson, Houli, Jetta, Dempsey, Nash, Slattery, Reimers, Hislop etc. Obviously some will miss out, and it becomes incumbent on them to go back to Bendigo and absolutely dominate. If Dyson isn't kept in the Round 1 side, whether he can, will do this will be a very telling test in my view.

(Assumed automatic senior selections are: Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher, Ryder, Mal, Laycock, Hille, McPhee, Davey, Lovett, Monfries, McVeigh, Watson, Stanton, Winderlich, NLM and Welsh).

i thought you blokes played very well against the lions. im impressed. tho the lions were definitely undercooked. still, i think you'll have a better season than many think. your run out of defence was fantastic - you almost swamped the lions midfield! hopefully for you this wasn't a one off.

here's hoping round 3 is a cracker.

Have you heard the expression, "you play how you practice"??

I didn't call him a squib. I referred to the "squib" incident. It's there and you can justify it happening because a) It's a practice/NAB match or b) The game was already won or c) He could have got pollaxed.... but the incident WAS there. What would Mark Harvey, Terry Daniher or James Hird done in the same instance??

I wasn't getting stuck into Houli. I'm a huge fan and don't think it's an issue... I just acknowledged that it happened. Here... have a re-read!!

I have no hatred of Dyson, as someone suggested, I just know when I see a young player who can't cut it at League level. It's as simple as that.

Many players have come and gone before Ricky and a shit load of them are just like him....good,but not good enough.

PLUS..he doesn't have that "game day" vision on the field. He panics. Just because he always carries a serious, aggressive face while playing, doesn't mean he knows what he's doing. How many balls did Dyson take directly from a pack?

The pressure gets to him (the pressure of match conditions with TV cameras on) and he takes too long to decide what he's gunna do with the pill. He bombs away and kicks to high.

Posters like ant555 will stick up for him no matter what..untill he is delisted.

Thats fine,I admire some people's loyalty to the players. But i have to draw a line sometimes with some players and Dyson is at the point of no return.

50+ games and still waiting for a B.O.G....:o

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Top post Nobby! :thumbsu: :thumbsu: Bolded the bits I especially like..... well, I hate them actually, but I strongly agree! :o

I'm pretty sure we only held on to dyson because we got rid of so many others.

Can't see him being around after this year if he doesn't perform.

Oh, yeah. If it looks like it might smart, just don't go in at all. You want this Proud to be thinking, "geez, better sit back and watch; that Houli goes in pretty hard".

At the end of the day, Proud got a cheap ball because he was the only one with big brave balls.

(If it was indeed Proud, that is.)

Well, finally downloaded and watched the match.

Generally, I was dissapointed. From everything I'd read I suppose I expected to see a completely dominant Essendon side with glitering displays from the youngsters.

Instead I saw a terrible standard game where the opposition was absolute rubbish. Yes, the youngsters did alright, and you could see the new game plan. But frankly, thats side would be cut up by our 2007 senior side.

The run from the backline was generally crap. Because they ran a little like headless chooks. It will undoubtedly improve, but the number of times the 'run' actually resulted in the ball getting down quickly was dissapointingly small.

The highlights in my view were Monfries, Nash, Atkinson, Magin, and Houli and Johns to a lesser extent. The run was a good sign, but it needs a LOT of improvement before they stop running into each other's paths and using the ball better. But I was happy with the way the centre square worked, Monfries REALLY impressed me, and several others helped out well.

The biggest worry was that our senior CHB and FB (Ryder & Mal) were pantsed by a side generally disposing the ball poorly, and not by their #1 forwards.

But heh, this is our 2nd hit out for the year, with a seconds side. I suppose just after all the rave reviews I expected something more.

It definately was Proud.

That was the only downside about his game against the Lions though, he had no balls.

He also picked up 10 of his possies in the last quarter. Which can be taken a number of ways.

I agree that we probably had to keep Dyson (or Kepler) for 2008.... But they gave Dyson a 2 year contract, so he will still occupy a place on our list in '09, regardless of what he does (or doesn't do) in '08.

This year's draft will run quite deep too. :o
