What's every one's take on them?

Obviously two former champions of the club who now hold prominent positions in the media.

With Melbourne being somewhat of a "stale" club in recent years it just seems to me that these 2 blokes aren't fully utillising their abillity to promote the club. I suppose that they can't seem to appear biast. Perhaps because their still quite new on the media scene they'll wait untill their positions are solidified and then help out the club.

Do you think they are in a position to do more?

for a while its seemed to me that gary lyon has tried to rub out anyone believing he is bias by being antibias

If the Ox's promotion of the club is anythng like his 'special' comments then its probably a good thing he doesnt do more...

Agree with post above, anytime Lyon is questioned on Melbourne his general response is he loves the club (which is great) but always tries to move onto something else

I sense Garry is more keen to be involved with the club than the Ox. They'd both be great to have down here and with their media positions will bring a bit of attention to the club.

Gary's work recently has been fantastic. Just interesting to see if the footy club could get any more out of them

this is the start of garry lyon progression to the MFC board, give it 2 years i believe

My fear for you guys would be Lyons influence in picking a new coach.
He is a mate of Connolly and Connolly has a history of "mates" getting him
jobs in footy like at Freo. He was unsuccessful, your team wants someone
else he,s a nice bloke but he cannot coach, beware.

With Daniher now gone, I think we may see a bit more of the Ox down at Melbourne.

Have tried to avoid Seven's coverage, but hearing David on the radio, he comes across as a little more passionate about the Demons.

He genuinely wants the club to succeed. He has talked before about how grateful he is to the club for their assistance on the occassions when he hurt his knee, and also when he was going through his own personal issues.

However, My understanding is that the Ox hasn't been asked officially to come down and assist, although that may have changed since Daniher left.

As for Garry, well I'm not so sure.

Back in 1998, he was a Melbourne assistant coach. His role was only part time though, because on match day he would do commentary for 3AW on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This meant he would only be in the coach's box for night games, of which the Demons only had a handful.

At the end of '98, he was asked by Daniher to either concentrate full time on being an assistant coach, or going into the media.

It may seem a little unfair, but we know what route Garry took.

I probably would have liked to see Garry contribute a little more to the MFC.

Towards the end of his career when he was barely getting a game due to injury he was still on an extremely healthy contract. And yes, I knew he sacrificed his body for the club before that etc, but I still would have liked him to do a little more for the club.

And I really hope we don't get Chris Connolly. Should be one of Sheedy, Bailey, or Hardwick.

Think everyone totally agrees with you on that one. We don't want Neale Daniher the 2nd

News to me that Schwartz was a champion?? He was a great player before he did his knee in 95. After that he was nothing more than perhaps solid. No influence in our 2000 grand final except for getting beaten up by Wallace i think it was. Schwartz didn't do great things for the club people. Not sure how he worked his way into media because his status isn't great. Not sure what he could offer for the Dees as a 'coach' or 'assistant' of some kind.

I consider him a champion of the footy club. Not so much so for his on field efforts but the way in which he came back from 3 knee reconstructions was pretty unbelievable. I know its the cliche to say "he could of been = to carey", but this guys season in 1994 was way more exciting than anythign Buddy Franklin is delivering right now.

Also he doesn't necessarliy have to fill the position of a coach or assitant he could easily help out the clubs in other ways such as bringing a greater profile to the club if he was able to join the board

Good luck Dees . You are a famous club and should be up where you belong
in the home of Aussie rules. The AFL /VFL has a huge tradition and one of its oldest clubs has to be about the place for keeps.I'm sure all the other states agree.

l agree, Garry loves the club no doubt, Schwarta has some bitterness, maybe from the way he finished up

When Neita was given the captaincy ahead of Schwarta at the end of 99 it cut him up quite a bit. He did seem to get over it though and in 2000 you could almost sense that he was the spiritual leader of the club. I really think he could help out some of our younger players in a mentoring role, his influence would be invaluable.

I rate him as a champion, due to his courage, passion and determination that he had for the club. We all know that he was a superstar in 1994, and was on the verge of becoming an elite player. Obviously, he suffered three knee reconstructions which cut him down in his prime, but he bounced back and played a crucial role in getting us to the latter stages of September in 1998 and 2000. He also won the Best & Fairest in 1999. And in regards to that Grand Final, he was the only bloke on the team who was willing to fight against the Bombers, so that has to be respected to.
