Gaspar's second coming
By Melissa Ryan
February 5, 2005

Terry Wallace freely acknowledges that his opinion of Darren Gaspar has changed now that he oversees the Richmond defender as his coach, compared with last year when Wallace worked in the media.

Then, Wallace, like many, was not so kind to the full-back who played out his own season from hell within Richmond's depressing slump to the bottom of the ladder.

Gaspar returned in round one last year, only nine months after a knee reconstruction in mid-2003, but was a pale shadow in comparison with his All-Australian form. As a high-profile struggler, he bore much finger-pointing in the badly performing side.

"I think I was one of the ones that harshly assessed him and I know that Brian Taylor was worried about coming back to the club (to be the forward coach) because he was another who was harshly assessing him (in the media) but I don't think we're the lone rangers there," Wallace said.

"He wasn't able to stand up and do his job of what we knew as an All-Australian defender, but in fairness it was eight-and-a-half months off a knee reconstruction, which meant a very very limited pre-season."

In his quiet way this week, Gaspar, who took a pay cut at the end of last season to help the club in its recruiting hunt, reflected upon the difficulties of last year and said that 2004 and his comeback had been tougher for him to deal with than 2003 and the actual injury.

"When you're not playing, there's not much pressure on you because you're out of the spotlight and stuff, but last year I was trying to battle the knee and trying to play, it was pretty tough," Gaspar said.

"Doing the actual injury was not that bad, you do day-to-day things trying to get your knee better, but once you have to try to manage that and try to play, that's when it gets a bit harder."

He did not regret being there from round one, even though it created more duress on his body, which then had to be borne throughout the season.

"It's a hard one. How do you really know until you start doing it?" Gaspar said. "I could have left it until round 10 or something like that and then I might have taken a few more weeks to get going and then the season's over so I would have wasted the whole season. It's a hard one to say whether I should have left it for a few more weeks.

"In hindsight it probably didn't go that well early on and that set me back for the whole year so it was a bit tough, but hindsight's a wonderful thing."

But with the 2005 season looming, Gaspar is looking to re-establish himself as one of the game's premier defenders, and the difference in how he is physically feeling compared with this time last year is marked.

"It's been a lot easier. I haven't had to worry about my knee as much, or not at all," Gaspar said. "It's been quite good whereas last pre-season I was battling with the knee and my whole body was out of whack and felt that way, whereas this pre-season's been normal and I've been doing everything so it's been good.

"I'll be doing everything I can to be playing as good as I can and I'm looking forward to being very competitive this year."

It is something Wallace also anticipates in his planning, having left Gaspar out of the leadership group so the defender could concentrate on returning to full strength, and the coach said the signs were there.

"I always saw him at his best as being fairly cat-like, low to the ground, able to trap the ball and do those sorts of things and I've seen some of those cat-like qualities back in his training," Wallace said.

i hope we see him back to his best this year, it would make a huge difference to our defense if he is back to his all australian form.

He would be a huge bonus if he can recapture some semblence of his AA form , did the right thing taking the pay cut as well .

If he comes good and Schultz stands up , as well as the inclusion of Graham , the backline does not look that brittle at all , and if that is the case , as well as Cogs coming coming up , i don`t think it is all that unrealistic that we can achieve 10 - 12 wins

If Gaspar can come close to his AA form itll help the team no end.

What sort of am example is Gaspar to our new kids ?

A schit one.

Our future aint with him.

If gasper comes close to his 2000-2001 from it will be such an immense help to the team, it's his last chance surely he can pull some form together.

He is 100% fit and his confidence is neutral again. There is nothing stopping him playing 3 or 4 more great seasons.

hmmmm. i dunno bout that. at all trainings ive been to (5-6+) he is no stand out player as he should be. there is improvement, but more will be needed for him to remain in our side. i somehow doubt he will play on for to much longer. but i hope im wrong

Ive got no time for Gaspar. He basically said that he was out for himself by taking money that belongs to players of the ilk of Hird and Voss.

He took our weak pecking order and purged it for all it was worth. Would have liked to see him out of the door like Ottens.

I just want a new start and to do so want to get rid of the cancer that has been in our club for the years now.

I can't believe all these Gaspar knockers. Yes he had a bad year last year and yes he was overpaid for what he delivered. But for f#ck's sake, he was coming off a knee reco. He is a dual AA and at his best, will man up against the best forward of the opposition. This will leave Schulz (to prove himself), Graham and others to man up against the lesser lights.

Ease up and give him a go this year. If he has a poor year in 2005, then I move him on. But there's no way I would knock a defender of his calibre immediately after a knee reco.

no wonder so many think we tigers eat our own. as long as he wears a tigers gurnsey he has my 100% support. i am hoping he proves a lot of people wrong this year. i cant believe how many players are being written off when a ball hasnt even been kicked in anger yet!

yer very true. but i have my doubts about him. i just really hope he can take on a role and do something to keep everybody happy and most definately i hope he can prove me wrong. im not writing him off and saying he wont perform good enough. but he must show something to remain in our side.

Gaspar fit and in form is a vital member of the side and one of the best negating defenders in the league. Those with short memories should think back on round 11 in 2003 when he did his knee. Which team had the lowest scores kicked against them in the first 10 rounds. Go on...... guess.... that's right Richmond!!! and with a dud coach as well !! With Gaspar out we realised (if we had brain cells) how good he was at holding the rabble that was the rest of the defence together.

When he played last year he was awful. I rated him at about 25% "Gaspar" for most of the year. He appears to have lost a yard and some spring, He might be gone but let's hope he is not, because a fit Gaspar will keep us competitive while Wallet constructs a new defence.

And finally for those who criticise Gaspar's kicking (basically because they judge it on ungainliness rather than effectiveness), he is as good a shot at goal as Matthew Lloyd, if not better. So stick that up your "Chaffey or Zantuck"

Yours in indignation, Rampaging Robert!!

too may times we have been held up to ranson by players that have wanted more than they are worth, well it nearly has sent us bankrupt and to say that we eat our own what about the overpaid prima donnas that are controlled by fat chested agents who just want more money? Do they not eat on us? yes us the members who regulary put in every year.

i wait my breath on gasper, but i can tell you even though he has taken a pay cut he is still over valued and WE PAY
