Yes, yes I know, Collingwood supporters. He was a very good player and all that.

What I am asking is for non-Collingwood supporters.

Did you rate Gavin Brown?

Do you think he was put on a pedestal simply because he was Collingwood captain and maybe wasn't as great as they'd like you to believe?

Now I am not having a go at Coll supporters. It's quite natural to place your own team's heroes on a pedestal. I just want to see how opposition fans rated him, if at all.

Cheers

Even Collingwood supporters underrate him (myself included).

We forget he played 70% of his career out of position (key forward) and we tend to remember what an ordinary kick for goal he was.

great player in my mind may not have been the most skillful but one tough nut.

And can I just add; what was his preferred position? Wing?

Yep, and he was a very good wingman, and should of been left there.
I also thought he was a really good captain, and perhaps should of been captain for a couple of more years before Bucks took over.

I cant remember who it was particuarly but a past player on Grumpy Old Men recently said if Gavin Brown had have played on the wing his whole career, and not required to play out of position, he would have been one of the best wingers ever.

I rated him as a pretty good player. Not a champion or anything, a star when at his best I guess. I just assumed he must of been a really good bloke for how highly he's regarded down at Pieland. Either that or it's one of those Collingwood things. ;)

For as long as I hear that Gary Ablett was one of the best ever, I will hold Gavin Brown on a very high pedastal. Flogged him on many an occasion in the late 80's-90s.

Most courageous player I've seen.

How many goals did he kick in his best season? I'm sure it was 70 odd? not many non Collingwood people would realise that.

Correct me if I'm wrong or overly generous ;)

if i remember correctly, 76 in 1990 (and if i do remember correctly, i wish my memory would be that good for exams)

If left on a wing there would be no doubt the man would have won a Brownlow Medal.

Millane, Shaw & Brown could have been up there with the best.

Gavin Brown was close to if not the best wingman in the late 80's early 90's. Mathews played him at FF in the 1990 semi when BT was dropped and he kicked 5 goals in the first half to blow the game apart. After 1990 BT retired and Mathews played Brown at CHF for most of the rest of his career. He was too short and too skinny for CHF. He built himself up but was definitely played out of position. Eventually his body couldn't take the pounding and he went to half back where he won a B&F late in his career.

I never liked how Mathews played him and it lessened and shortened his career. Nevertheless he was a courageous and fierce competitor and he was all class on and off the field. His kicking was the only part of his game that wasn't as good as it should have been.

All in all he goes down as one of the best Collingwood players of the last 2 decades. In Collingwood’s premiership side of 1990 he was as good a player as anyone except Daicos who was a genuine freak of a footballer.

The man who started the fight in the 1990 grand final...
Good player - awful team!!! :D
That man was Sporn with a knee to a groin (I think on Banks) which Brown remonstrated against which is what escalated it.

The only player I've ever really admired at Collingwood, went about bussiness without all the fanfare, was Robert Harvey like in the way he played the game (fair , dedicated and fearless) could never be called a Figjam.
Not a big fan of the Woods so it's a big call for me to rap up a Collingwood player.

Dont compare him to Harvey.

Another great footballer under rated due to playing in very undermanned and unsuccesful team for most of his career.

If you really want to get an idea of how good this guy was, having a look at his performances at the elite level, State of Origin, first class they were.

Banks hit Sporn to start the fight. Kieran Sporn was a deadset squib and would never have hit a hardman like Banks. We heard two days before the game that Banks was sure to belt somebody.

Brown ran the length of the field to hit Sporn, and TD was right on his tail in the run. Collingwood held their composure and Essendon played the man. Those 50m penalties in the 2nd were critical.

Speaking of Harvey, he was absolutely shafted when Brown won the EJ Whitten medal.

I guess we could debate this all day and night. It doesn't matter who started it. As far as I'm concerned and I am sure Sheedy as well, just about all bets are off in a GF. Brown never started anything though. He always stuck up for his team mates too. Bottom line is Brown was of unquestionable character on and off the ground and since his retirement has served the club as a runner and assistant coach in the same understated manner that he played his footy.

In about 1997 or 1998 before Brown come to the notice of many I had him in a Brownlow bet at huge odds. He ended up having a breakthrough year. He didn’t poll a vote. I though I had a chance of some dough but even the umpires didn’t notice him.

He didnt talk enough

Always liked Gavin Brown, was the first player I ever heard called a 'hyperstar'.
It fitted.

Rowdy was always a personal favourite. He had courage that at times bordered on stupidity, ala Leigh Colbert. Never afraid to back into a pack, or put his head over the contested ball.
