just posted this in another thread, but by the sounds of the mail im recieving, this mans name will require a new thread.

strong money has come tonight for gavin brown on sportsbet (67s into 21s) and has been strongly linked with the club behind closed doors in the aftermarth of what has happened.

any thoughts on how he would fit in? or if the melbourne supporters would like to see him at the club?

Dunno. Will Eddie let us?

By the sounds of it we are talking to anyone that might be even a remote show. I think he is just another name on a long list right now.

its a bit like, why did Essendon let Harvey go to Fremantle as an assistant coach.

Why did Collingwood let Brown go to Carlton. Buckley has been able to make some dollars in the media while Brown has been at the club the whole time yet there has been no effort from Collingwood to groom him for the top position.

Collingwood dont like anyone who is good going to another club.

No one knows what assistant coaches are like other than to see the improvement in the team that they go to.

Carltons improvement this year is certainly a positive but I think there is always something in why they are allowed to leave and go to another club in the same capacity.

It would appear Carlton supporters also waste their hard earnt on coaching decisions as well as on the premiership markets now days.

If Brown wants the job, he should go for it, but I think that's the type of coach I would be looking at for Melbourne. Senior old coaches won't have the lenghth of time needed to get a great list.

haha, well I doubt by $5 hard earnt had much to do with this move, just as I'm sure Carlton supporters aren't the only ones who backed us to win a flag. haha

But i do like what wmvaux said below, he'd be a good fit for a young up and coming list. couldn't see a Malthouse or Parkin (as grant thomas suggested) being there for the long haul

He's a gun. Would be over the moon to see him get a chance.

Kind of agree. Really surprised his name hasn't been mentioned much. If Malthouse, Williams, Clarkson, Roos etc are out of reach, then we must turn our attention to Brown, Neeld, Burns, Sanderson and other leading assisstant coaches around the country.

I'm sure Brown could bring that aggression and respect to the club, but what is he like in regards to gamelplans etc?

It was a joke. I just figure Eddie thinks he is running our club these days and we can't talk to anyone without his permission if they've so much as seen a Collingwood game.

Cheers mate (hard to pick on here). Yeah Eddie is like that.

Wouldnt be the worse crime though to not know he was at Carlton. Very low profile and I dont hear him talked up much as a prospect. Love to see him take on a gig and show up Buckley.

He left because he was never going to get the top job with us; which is fair enough.

I thought Brown was only the VFL coach at Collingwood - and went to Carlton to get more involved with coaching the seniors. Could be wrong, but he was definitely VFL coach for a long while down there.
Almost all clubs will let guys go if they're not able to give them further opportunity. ie whichever Scott they had & also Alan Richardson also left because they couldn't fit him into match-day roles.

Yep but the point is that the club that employs them will know the ability of an assistant coach the best and is the best guage. That Brown was not given a match day role despite the club seeing him on a regular basis at various roles over the course of a decade must be some indicator as to how he is rated by them.

Buckley they bent over backwards to get into head coaching role and yet Brown had to go elsewhere to find something that he believed was worthy of his ability.

Not being able to fit someone into a match day role when they want that role is some indication as to where the club sees thier abilities I would think.

Yeah, given how long he's been around, I think if he was real coaching material we would have heard more plaudits for him. He's generally invisible in the media - unlike guys like McCartney, Sanderson and Neeld. Makes me suspect he's nothing special.
