Good old excuse making Choco. Just mentioned on his inglorious interview with satruday football that Geelong have benefited from the father son rule as another excuse.

so which club has the only father son running around who was not eligible

p.s i was going to post this on bay 13 - but it just didn't feel right :D

Why is truth an excuse?
They have benefited from it and quite frankly good luck to them as IMO it is a good rule albeit somewhat stuffed for clubs such as ours.

Bay 13 would have been the way to go as IMO most on this board would agree with that statement. :thumbsu:

Sounded bitter when he said it... but he's not wrong.

Ablett x2, Hawkins, Scarlett, Blake among others. That's the future spine of the team pretty much. I'd say they've just had a bit of an advantage

OK, I dislike Choko as much as anyone (he is a good coach but he gives me the shits) BUT he is spot on with this one. Take a look at that side and some of the real champs there were father son picks.

Off the top of my head these are the FS picks on Geelong's list

Scarlett
G. Ablett
N. Ablett
Blake
Hawkins

Thats some pretty impressive talent. One has been voted AFLPA player of the year, his brother kicked 3 goals in the GF while Scarlett was well in contention for the Norm Smith Medal. Blake was stiff to miss out on the GF.

Wish we had that much luck with the FS picks. Look at the cross section of that list and they got the sort of players that are hardest to find. A Champion FB, a couple of key forwards and one of them looks to be an absolutle mega star in the making, a pretty promising ruckman and a GUN midfielder.

Geelong have drafted exceptionally well over the years (more specifically since 2000 draft) but they have also been given a MAJOR boost with FS pick and they did it while the rules were that you only have to give up a 3rd round pick for the kid.

Wasn't J Brown eligible for Geelong through the father son rule?? Wow scary how good they'd be if they had him.
No he wasn't.

He is a Geelong lad. He played for Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup but he was only eligable to Brisbane under the father son rule because his old man played for Fitzroy. Mind you he only just qualified at the time. Back then the rule was 50 VFL/AFL games and his old man played 51 games for Fitzroy!

It seems to me every other club is getting super lucky with their father son picks while we can't even get what should be ours

We have, but just like you guys we haven't benefited from high draft picks, we have too much pride to finish bottom 4.

Right.. thanks for the info..

Interstate clubs have a different rules ie number of games, with regard to father son selections, can someone remind me again what those rules are..

The rules are whatever the afl can come up with to ensure we don't get a decent player with a f/s selection.

Would be funny if it wasn't true.
The only reason we got Ebert is because nobody wanted him at the time.

I mean how can the son of the great man himself not qualify for Port?
Choco's kids qualify for Collingwood and not Port Adelaide. double

I'm not disputing who they have picked up.

but after being belted by 119 points, its like blaming injuries, inexperience or umpires. Or failing to bring up the fact that he had 10 players from the 04 flag in his team which was only .2 of year younger than the cats

my point is all iam is hearing is lame lame excuses. The crows never ever ever get the chance

Try bay 13. ;) :D

Can someone remind me which is the only club in the AFL that has an ineligable player on their list under the father son rule? :D
We did it (cheated) for South Australia. :p

Biggest load of crap I have ever read. Port do nothing for SA only do things for themselves. :D
One and the same really.
Bit like yesterday, daddy unhappy, mum and kids unhappy as well. Lucky thing we do not have a dog I tell ya. :p

Same reason Barrie Robran's two sons weren't eligible for us either. The two greatest players ever in SA and neither of their sons was eligible under the FS rule.

Yet some bloke who was a scrubber for a few years back in 1970s Melbourne gets his sons special treatment. Go figure.

Actually I think the Robran's are eligible now, same with Luke Darcy. There are quite a few interesting options in retrospect that the afl made available to us too late - It's why a few of us have dubbed it the grandfather / son rule :p

Of all the inequities in the AFL this is the one that annoys me the most and should be done away with. It is a relic of the VFL regime and has no place in the AFL. The simplest thing to do is to dump it.

Port should not be able to draw from any other club other than the Port Magpies. They are happy to spread their 100+ years of heritage when it suits them, so they should keep their filthy paws of the other SANFL clubs.

Adelaide, born out of the 10 SANFL, is the only club who should have rights to the other 9 clubs. If Port don't like it then they should forget that they have anything to do with the Port Magpies.

But any claim that we make on these players under the FS rule is contentious at best. I grew up watching Ross Gibbs play for Glenelg. Of course I wanted Bryce to play for Adelaide. But Ross was a Western Australian that never played for Adelaide.

The whole FS thing is a sham. It distorts the draft. It can never be equitable. We should have never agreed with it in the first place!

...
No need to be rude young fella as that is actually what Port would have liked. Same eligibility rules as the Victorian clubs but from Port. :thumbsu:

But it won't stop you from recruiting those players from the other SANFL clubs when it suits. Typical Port, never had any morals.
