With Gablett stepping up this season has anyone noticed that Bartel is down on form. Corey is definitly stepped up though. Corey has the most disposals or 2nd most in the league I think and he doesn't seem to get recognised much. Bartel last year at this stage was averaging 27.92 disposals per game, .91 Goals per game, 6.25 marks per game, .91 hitouts per game, 5.92 tackles per game and 1.66 free kicks per game and this year that has dropped to 25.25 disposals per game, .58 goals per game, 4.92 marks per game, .25 hitouts per game, 5.5 tackles per game and 1.66 free kicks per game.

It hasn't dropped that much with his stats but amazingly I think his playing intensity and hardball gets have dropped a lot from last year.

Corey, Bartel, Ling, Selwood, Kelly and mackie have all been performing really well this year and have all stepped up (bar Bartel) but they aren't getting recognised because of how well Gary Ablett is playing.

What are your opinions on this matter?

Cue the Hawthorn circus!

Honestly, I think if some of these players were split up to be on their own at some clubs they wouldn't be as good as what they are now.

If Joel Corey was at Essendon, I don't think he'd get 30 disposals a game, nor would Selwood just yet. Ling is a little underrated as a tagger, I think he's brilliant.

But I think these midfielders work well as a team, and if you split them up to other sides I don't they'd perform as well as what they do.

Agree on the whole. Ablett gets the most attention, as he should, but the other mids are playing very well.
I expect Bartel to come out firing for the second half of the year.
Apparently been injured, and the break last weekend is supposedly the perfect thing he needs. Will be back to his best by September.

Scary, hey?! ;)

Bartel was a one season wonder.
Selwood is getting away with being the fifth string.
Kelly....the only one that rates him is Kelly.
Corey is old.
Ling is ugly.

Ablett is a gun but the rest of them are pretty ordinary.

Yeah, and Chapman is bald and Stokes is a downhill skier. You tell 'em crypt!

I thought we were just discussing the midfield. The forwards discussion is later on but since you opened the debate:

Hawkins is fat.
Mooney is stupid.

The Eagles are a perfect example.

Take out Judd and Cousins and guys who were 4th or 5th in line are suddenly asked to do it all the time and can't.

Well done to the Cats, they certainly have a formidable midfield but as addressed earlier, an injury or two to key players could be devastating (as it would be to anyone).

They actually rotate through the midfield, but I'm sure you knew that since you seem to know a bit about the Cats.

Prismall who is a promising player and probably would get a game anywhere else can't get into the Geelong midfield line up. It sort of says it all when a talented kid can't break in. Depth is very deep down at the Cattery, his just a top up player atm.

They pinch hit. I would hardly say that they are part of your midfield rotation though. Similar to what Cyril Rioli does for us.

yes but Kerr and Priddis are still stepping up, espicially Priddis. Before Priddis was injured he was averaging like 28 touches and 4 hard ball gets per game or something and it looks like his back in form now with a handy 45 touches last match to go alongside Kerr's 40.

Yeah, they're 15th as well.

Really stepped up, haven't they....

Priddis is terrible.

Gets plenty of it but as an opposition team you don't mind that because he is more than likely to kick it straight back to you.

Yer I could see Corey and Selwood as just a teams star midfielder each and I agree it would be a different story because they would then be getting the No.1 tag and they wouldn't be getting all those cheap handballs from Gablett, Bartel, Ling etc so I think their disposals, marks and all those stats would drop because they would each have a ling or a kirk or a rawlings on them each week and as I said they wouldn't be getting all those cheap stats as a team midfield, they would have to work for every single possesion.

Nothing handy about the 45 touches. Might be able to get the ball, but doing something with it is a different matter.

Yes he still has to work on that but before he got that injury this year he was effective with his possesions.

Agreed. Prismall would most likely be in all the teams top 3 midfielders besides maybe Geelong, Hawthorn, Bulldogs and Port's.

Sorry were we talking about West Coast as a team or 2 of there former 2nd string mids???

Well who else have they lost that would explain their huge fall?

Rowan Jones?

Judd and Cousins didn't make them suddenly lose 10 or so spots on the ladder. They've under performed this season and have had a few injurys.

There forward line is doing shit as well.

It's not who they've lost it's the players form which has been down and that may or may not be a dirrect result of losing Cousins and Judd.

So which is it?

The EXACT same list, minus Judd and Cousins, and they drop down the ladder.

Coincidence?

I'd say if Geelong lost GAblett and Bartell they could be excused if they dropped down the ladder. No offence to Corey or Enright, but they are no GAblett.

I was supposed to put may or may not be a direct result of losing Judd and Cousins.
