Love 'In The Air Tonight'' and Sussudio holds a special place for me as it was the song on the radio when my son was born

I can never get the image of Phil Collins in my mums wool brochures standing there mannequin like in a v neck knitted jumper

If you're talking about what Genesis evolved into circa mid 80s, or most of Phil Collins's solo stuff, then I fully concur with BB. Trite fluff. However, the Gabriel era Genesis was a prog rock outfit of the highest order. Nothing at all like the popcorn served up on Invisible Touch.

The Dice Man alluded to the artsy and intellectual early Genesis. A couple of albums in particular are feted as classics of the prog rock genre: Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. This genre is certainly not everyone's cup of tea. As one reviewer put it, the terms 'pretentious' and 'long-winded' are, to a prog rock fan, a shining endorsement.

Personally, I'm a big fan of prog rock. Think Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield. In more recent times, The Flaming Lips are looked upon as a kind of neo-prog rock, and even bands like Ween have ventured into this style.

Re. the evolution of Genesis (an interesting theological discussion there!), I would also point you in the direction of a band like Split Enz, whose early albums were nothing like what they were to become. Check out Mental Notes or Second Thoughts (circa 1975-76) and you will find music that would be fairly inaccessable to the listener who is only familiar with the Neil Finn era (and a great era it was, mind you). These albums were obviously influenced by Genesis in particular. Phil Judd - Split Enz founder and later lead singer of The Swingers - was known to be a Genesis enthusiast.
