should they be sterilized? should a couple with down sydnrome be able have kids? this is a rather tough topic for me, i'd be interested in what others thoughts on the issues are.

if you, 3 days into your pregnancy, realised you had a child with a deficient number of chromosomes (found through advanced screening methods), would you have it aborted? do you think that would be terminating a potential life because of your values and what you want for the child, rather than giving the child a choice?

That is just discriminatory.

there is far more to it than that. should blind people fly aircraft, or is that discriminating?

I believe that shouldn't be discriminatory as it endangers the lives of others.

i would never have an abortion coz of the affects it could have on my body and any future child baring i might decide on plus one of my best friends had down syndrome and it was a privellage being in her life

sterilising them however is probably a good idea if the people on my bus are anything to go by. It runs past the council workshop where a lot of disabled whatever u wanna call it ppl work and the filth coming out of their mouths was equal to yr 8 gutter talk (most would be 18 - 40 years old) and as opposed to yr 8 ers it worries me that they may actually carry through with these actions!

a lot of that show was different to what youre saying, the girls on that show didnt understand about growing up and were freaking out and thought they were bleeding to death, thats a bit different to what youre saying i think.

OMG lol reminds me of my friend now she used to keep the most massive packets of pads in her locker and make the biggest deal of having her um....yeh lol so at least her mum had her prepared and she constantly used to announce to everyone that it was private (yet would make a big deal of it) funny girl...her mum was actually a foster mum who looked after hundreds of foster kids with down syndrome, very special lady so thats obviously another option for the parents...adopting them out

nah different to the girls on the show, they only had mental capacities of small children so they had no idea, so all it did was scare them to death.

sad but even sadder is i know a few "normal" (horrible word i know) girls whos mums never told them bout that kinda thing and felt the same way

Well it has to be on a case by case basis, one example would have to be our water boy, a 25 year old man who has the intellectual capacities of a 10-12 year old, do I think that he should have kids, provided that he has the full support of family and friends ?, I would say yes, because he's grouse and is well liked throughout the club and our league, (he also plays cricket for Murchison as well, he tries his guts out, but you have to encourage him heaps, and keep the instructions as basic as possible, but I do that anyway because i'm a basic man:D ).

But, in the case of some the young women on 4 Corners, no because you run into the trouble of having to find appropriate accomodation when the primary care-giver (in nearly all cases, the parents) die.

But, if the worst comes to the worst and they find themselves pregnant, I think one solution would be having a combination of a half way house like a foster home, as well as a lot of imput by the mother/father and thier prespective parents.

[deleted because most of my post has been made irrelevant as my first question was cleared up by nic]

On the other hand I'm not sure, you may be suggesting that steralising is for convenience. Again this presents problems. There are plenty of people unfit to be parents, yet we can't go steralising them, and that makes me think that we could only get away with this because of their mental capacity - taking advantage of them to some extent. Still, I can see the problems that a Down Syndrome couple taking care of babies could present, and I am somewhat sympathetic to the idea. I guess... I'd like to know more about Down Syndrome and what the exact handicaps are before answering this, as I haven't known anyone with it since I was about 8.

I will probably cop a lot for it, but if my partner was having a baby and we found out it would be severely disabled, I would not want to have the child.

The main reason is (depending on the type of disability etc), is because, if they are severely disabled, what sort of life is that to lead? It would be a major hindrance, they would always be at the bottom of the social ladder when at school (no matter how hard you try to deny it).

If it was something like down syndrome, it would be a tough choice, because generally people with down syndrome are really good people.

Down Syndrome isn't carried on a gene, it's having an extra chromosome, 21 I think, therefore having 47 instead of 46 chromosomes. One of the main factors in the likely hood of Down Syndrom is the age of the mother, I think. Obviously, I really need to study for my genetics exam on Wednesday.:D

first comment, it had a few women on there who had been sterilised at about 14 and they were angry that their parents did that bcos they felt it had stripped them of their womenhood.

there were other cases where the girls were too handicapped to understand what was happening to them and it would make them either really upset or angry and things, and they would never understand it, and only had the mental capacity of a 1-2 year old, so the parents got them sterilised bcos it wasnt doing them any good and they would never be able to look after a baby anyway, as in they wouldnt understand what it is. they couldnt master basic language let alone look after a child.

and the main agrument was whether it should be illegal to sterilise them (its currently illegal in australia).

i think that it should be a case by case thing myself.

second comment, yeh definately, like that psycho bitch who killed her four babies, how the hell was she allowed to have children in her care going by her past?

Do you mean if they have cerebral palsy, 30 years ago people with this problem were called *******s & locked away in mental institutions, then it was discovered, that while their body was ******ed, their brains were totally normal, in fact a lot of people with cerebral palsy, have very high IQ's.

With the advent of computers, they were able to communicate, Melinda was a teachers aide at my kids school, she had cerebral palsy, confined to a wheelchair & could hardly speak, she had a computer whcih she used as her means of communication, all the children were excited when Melinda printed out a special message to them, saying she loved their drawings, or their story was terrific, my kids used to bring them home & put them on the fridge, they were so proud, that Melinda complimented them, they never once looked at her as ******ed, just someone lucky enough to have a special chair, so they don't have to walk, as my son put it. :D

Melinda has written 3 books, given an Order of Australia medal & been introduced to the Queen, yet a lot of people would have aborted her, because she was going to be ******ed. :(

While I understand what you are saying Sandy darling, I just have the opinion that I would not want the baby to lead a life which is always left, wanting.

I'm happy for people like the one you mentioned to make an impression on the world, but I couldn't cope with my own children not being able to grab life by the scruff of the neck.

I understand this is more a case of me being selfish, but it's just the line of thinking I have adopted.

But Melinda did grab life by the scruff of the neck & I dare say achieved a hell of a lot more than so called "normal" people.

She strove to prove that people with disabilities, can achieve just as much as non handicapped people & she proved that, she also went on to get married to a man who also had cerebral palsy & they had a child, guess what, the child was born "normal".

all well and good Mantis, however, people with a genetically transmittable disease (as was stated by the original post) should be sterilised.

Ok, 1/100 might produce a normal' baby, but that child still carries the genes for that particular disease (or condition).

Why should we allow defective people to breed? That is just debasing the human population. If they arnt white, blonde, blue eyed, then they arnt worth keeping. (waits for the pathetic response to what is obviously a tongue in cheek comment)
