So our new board whipping boy, George Burbury, is probably deserving of a thread of his own to take the copious posts out of the preview and review threads the same as Ballroom recently. The creation of the Blitz thread has cleaned up the other threads greatly, so i think Georgy deserves one too!

There is no question his return has been below what most posters expected from him, but it seems we latch onto a player to direct all our anger or disappointment, and this is often out of line with reality.

Lets remember, he is a recently elevated rookie from Tassie, who was a rower. He has demonstrated some great goal sense and defensive pressure in the VFL and as such, with so many injuries to our starting 22, he has been given a month or two to get the feel of the AFL standard and do his best in the absence of our first choice small forwards.

To direct such vitriol as we have seen towards a lad in his 7th game, as a small forward which is notoriously light on for gathering touches is too harsh. if you watch even just the first qtr you see him doing his job quite well.

a few highlights;
quick hands to selwood deep i50 from a throw in, when selwood loses it he is back in laying tackles

30 meter punch when out matched in a marking contest

constantly presenting about 70 from goal as a target for the rebound 50.

presented front and square a few times to hawkins, but the ball went over the back, hawk really should have been trying to bring that to ground where his teammate was.

macintosh and lonners both burned him when he was 40 out on his own, but he kept working after being ignored when it was turned over by lonners deep kick he was there tackling and eventually it came to him for a snap which was partially smothered...

i guess i just don't know what people are expecting.

he is constantly in the right spots, laying tackles, giving quick hands etc. he was fumbling a bit, but so was everyone, including selwood, it was very wet.

i don't think he is best 22, but certainly we should temper our criticism in line with his actual experience and effort.

I have been critical of Blitzs role in team as many of you know, but that is more a MC bashing than the player himself, i am quite keen on him being a 2nd ruck, and am critical when he turns in low numbers playing as a winger as i think others could be doing that role better. I was a fan of him in the last 2 games though as he played as a ruckman.

with burbs, the only real fit option in the 2s is Schroder, but he is really a mid, whereas burbs is actually a forward, be it in the VFL or AFL, and i am a fan of playing recruits in their position.

So what is the issue with his performance thus far? Yes he isn't chapman. but then, neither was chapman at the same stage in his career....

no he shouldn't be getting games with a fit list, but we have 11 guys in the injury list, so we have to embrace these kids getting a chance and hope they are better for the experience rather than just sling crap at them because they don't play like 100 gamers.

Yep he might not make it, but to make that call after 7 games is a bit rich.

On what ive seen so far - i think McCarthy is the better prospect of the 2 - and i was surprised when they dropped him - to be replaced by Burbury

McCarthy has got a bit of pace - i think he can break the lines - and i think will end up quite a decent player

Burbury - main criticism - is he doesnt do the basics well - surely its not asking too much of an AFL listed player to take simple chest and overhead marks - and just how that bloke moves around the ground - the 1st thought that comes into my head is - Showpony

Might be very wrong here but I think McCarthy got injured (wasn't dropped).

McCarthy was never dropped. He was a late withdrawal from the Lions game and hasn't played any footy since.

i think thats a bit harsh, but each to their own.

macca and burbs numbers this year are almost the same, except burbs actually hit the scoreboard more.

burbs/macca
games 5/2
kicks 5.8/7
handballs 5.2/3.5
marks 3/1
goals .2/0
tackles 5.4/4.5
goal assists .6/.5

so really you get a similar package with either in terms of output this year, but macca did his back at the same time burbs was right to go after his jaw, so they just swapped them. may swap back next week as i think macca is back on the park.

Needs to kick the sitters, mark the sitters, and give off the sitters.
Which would then stop giving some on this board the s(h)itters.

I'm not sure McCarthy has been any better to be truthful. He certainly wasn't kicking any more goals. Both are very inexperienced and there will be some pain along the way.

Excellent post (I've edited it but it's all very good). I do have one quibble, which is entirely my own:

Can people stop trumpeting coming from other sports as some sort of good thing?

You know what kind of young players I'd like to see? Young FOOTBALL players. Not basketballers. Not rowers. Not runners. I'd like the best young footballers developing at our club to play football strangely enough. The opposition doesn't give a shit what their backgrounds are and if actual football skills aren't up to it they become weaknesses.

Give Bourke a go! Burbs has had his. No chance Bourke would be a mid for a while anyway start the kid off in the hf even if he is a medium build mid. my boys: Thurlow, Bourke & Smedts! Burbury I rate but should probably be rotated with a few younger players week in-week out which would most likely be him and McCarthy going 1 for 1.

Finally Partridge, someone has said it. Why the hell are we seeing players from different sports getting placed ahead of kids who have lived and breathed footy most likely since Auskick? Every year a few kids are missing out on their shot for international nobodies who don't know a thing about the sport. A few kids every year? Yeah it's not much but that amounts to a lot of broken dreams in the years to come especially if more international sportsmen come across, assuming they will. Prime example is a JPod type player sure we got him at 28 but that's an older guy in his last years looking for his chance with the potential to be a star like he was with us, adding in these people from different sports or countries hasn't even expanded AFL in any way yet and I doubt it ever will, waste of time.

Shitbury needs to learn to mark, kick and handball. He runs to the right spot only to embarrass himself every time he touches the ball. Still can't believe we chose this bloke over chappy. Disgusting decision

defensive pressure is good but if you can't take marks, make good decisions and kick goals you shouldn't be in the team as a small forward

personally i prefer smart players who do the basics well over guys who can apply defensive pressure

I don't dislike Burbury, and his efforts are fine (same as McCarthy), but he has been really bad the last few weeks. Nothing wrong with sending him back to the VFL to get some touch back. Pity Smedts isn't fit, he's one player who could slot in as a medium forward with pace and do the same role.

I don't see that at all. That to me rings of a Fasolo/SJ/Mackie look at me type and I have yet to see one act that makes me think Showpony.
Can't argue that the basic skills need to improve. He has spilled some marks and missed some possessions.

I actually thought the McCarthy got hurt, as Pivo stated, and Burbs came back in for him. And he had his face rearranged. That will sap the confidence in anyone. Also, The Hawks and PA games, were really hot kitchens. Not sure of too many 5 or 6 games that would have, have, or will make great accounts of themselves in those high pressure finals type games.

Wont disagree that he needs to work harder on his skills etc but nothing being said here want said about Mots in his early days. one does not equate the other but the level of vitriol and criticism just seems disproportionate for mine…

Go Catters

TL; DR..

But he gets himself into the right spots, if he just threw it on the boot then it'll either go through for a goal or not, but it's probably better then panicking and then turning it over with no score when he could have kicked 3 goals on Sunday, and then all of the sudden we win by 23 points.

At worst, he kicks 3 behinds and we win by 8, still 2 strait kicks if the game went longer. At least he's having a red hot crack, but as it sits, he is a liability in a forward-line that can't kick set shot goals for shit,so we need as many as possible, especially the gimmes which he can get onto.

It seems a fine line with these youngsters, where a couple of goals, and the resulting confidence boost, could make a huge difference.

Burbury no doubt takes those chest marks all day in training and in the VFL, so the difference on the big stage would appear to be what is going on between his ears.

These kids would be putting a
lot of pressure on themselves, so the club and the fans should try not to add to that.

The thing is he has done it at VFL level and needs a bit more composure on the big stage and he'll be right.
I do think he's had a good taste of it now and should go back to the Vfl to regain some confidence.
He'll be a much more productive player next time he comes up to AFL.

i guess i just don't know what people are expecting.

To take uncontested marks , and kick the goals that are basically handpass distance. All the hard work is fine and noted but he simply must be better at making the most of his chances. Probably too late now , he is probably starting to get a bit a error fatigue which induces stress , which induces error .....
