We all stuck the boot into Chrisco in the awesome thread…. and particularly those that get conned by those christmas-exploiting merchants.

If I am being really honest, one of my consumer failings is management of gift cards, especially at this time of year.

I tend to be happy to receive a gift card… But am I the only one that then forgets the cards when I am out shopping? Or I will bring the card with me but then can't find anything worth buying. I think they must be very profitable to the retailers as they:
- must know that x% of card sales will only result in y% of inventory usage, as cards expire it is just free money for them
- probably result in people upping their purchase from what they actually need to something slightly more expensive than if they didn't have the card

Anyone else bad with these things?

Had a Gift Card where somehow nothing had been loaded onto it...$50....awesome feeling being at the register when that was declined.:$

This happened last year with a card that I had purchased from Napoleon - luckily they keep a book listing all their gift card sales and was able to get the money put on - they added $10 for the inconvenience.

The thing I hate about gift cards is the determination of the store to make you spend every last cent. I had a $100 ikea gift card and spent all but $6 and they wouldn't just give me the change and this thing has now been floating around in my bag forever - bonus for them.

I was getting my wife a present from The Body Shop the other day and the woman in front of me gave me what was left on her gift card. It was only $3 or so but thought that was nice of her.

Are you getting lots of gift card freebie promotions in Australia? For example, buy a $25 gift card from Subway and get a free sub. I'm seeing lots of promotions like that pop up.

I always get BCF or Dymocks cards for Christmas, Birthdays and Fathersday.

I've never complained once.

My other half is a bunnings man - for a recent milestone birthday he thought he had died and gone to heaven when what seemed like every second person gave him a bunnings voucher

Yep! I sure am.
I find it worse, though, when I spend a bazillion dollars at Woolies in order to get a $30 voucher that expires in 2 or 3 months. That's about the length of time it takes me to a) remember I have it and b) locate it :( It then sits in my wallet until the day after it expires.... Unspent :( The same thing happens with their $15 vouchers at the bottom of their dockets that expire in a month.

With gift vouchers, I need a better system- eg like taking all the kids' drawings from 10 years ago off my fridge then sticky-taping vouchers there. Maybe hooking up an alarm or siren or something to the fridge door so that, when it opens, I am reminded to pick up my voucher and take it shopping!

And yes- I always spend more than just my voucher. But that doesn't worry me at places like Dymock's or Bunnings, where I always enjoy emptying out my wallet :)

Qantas gift vouchers should be avoided based on my experiences. I had a group of interstate friends pool together and buy me two vouchers as a wedding present. When we went to book flights online the option to pay with a voucher takes you to another screen where surprise, surprise the prices were higher than previously quoted, about $80 per person per leg for the Adelaide-Perth flights we wanted. Plus if you want to use more than 1 voucher you need to call their service centre that charges $40 per transaction - our second voucher was only $100 and $80 of that went in call centre fees.

So the net result from the vouchers that should've covered the cost of our flights was about $300 out of our own pocket. campaigners.

This. My brother and I will usually get our old man a Bunnings gift card, even if we know what he needs/wants we'll get him the gift card. He gets an excuse to go to Bunnings again, that's what he really wants.

Gift cards are handy for me living overseas. I usually get my parents Bunnings cards too. Decided to do something different and got them a gift card plus a huge Christmas hamper from Beechworth Bakery (they live near one). Got a skype call and they were pleasantly surprised.

A friend of mine received a $100 myer gift card this christmas

he didn't want it so he went to myer and used it to purchase a $100 coles myer gift card
then went to coles and used that card to buy a $100 JB card

then went to JB to buy what he wanted

thought that was pretty funny

Ingenious!

The retailer i work at has Gift Cards that never expire. The shock on people's faces when we tell them is amazing, like its such a ridiculous notion

I hate GC's that expire. Shits me no end. The company has the money, so what difference does it make when it gets used?

I also love receiving gift cards. Love the choice
