Nahas brought up his 20th goal on the weekend, making him the 5th player with 20+ and Cotchin on 16 only missing due to poor conversion. This sort of spread of goalkickers is something we have lacked for a long time and IMO one of the key areas of improvement this year, even if we haven't improved our win-loss much. Not as good as the top 2 teams but with less opportortunity a good result nonetheless.

Over the offseason the emphasis must be on both creating more clearances and more midfield pressure, which will generate more direct inside 50s to help the forwards and more opportunity for the defenders to rebound.

Yeah, I remember thinking the same thing when I heard that. Very impressive when you consider we only had one goalkicker above 20 last year. Hoping Cotch nails 4 more for the year to add another one to the list.

its a big tick for hardwick, he said we needed to improve that area and we have. next year the defensive game plan comes in apparently. we have shown some good signs defensivly during our purple patch and vs the swans. i reckon dimma can do it. we are now one of the best scoring teams out of the 8, and better than a few in 8 :thumbsu:

Yep, a very good sign.

The bonus being that Jack hasn't really had to sacrifice too much on the goal kicking leaderboard. Could still end up with 70 odd before the year is out, not that far behind last year's tally.

Morton must be around 10 or above? He could get to 20 aswell potentially. I know he kicked 3 or 4 Vs Carlton yeah?

It's a shame we lost our 2nd leading goalkicker from last year. Another 15 from Andy Collins would have made.........not a lot of difference really.

I did a check after last year - 15 goals for our 2nd leading goalkicker was our worst performance VFL/AFL since 1923 (when the whole team only kicked 130 goals for the entire year). Combined with the fact that we had the league leading goalkicker, it was a complete statistical freak.
Has there ever been another team where the team leading goalkicker kicked more than 5 times the second?

Our tally so far this season
56 Reiwoldt
31 Vickery
26 Martin
23 King
20 Nahas
16 Cotchin
11 Miller
9 Deledio, Foley
6 Grigg, White
5 Jackson, Houli, Morton
4 Newman, Helbig, Graham, Farmer
3 Edwards, Nason
1 Griffiths, Tuck, Browne
Total of 253 goals (+ 177* Behinds)

Last year
Jack 78, Collins 15, Nason 14, Nahas 13, King 12, Morton 12, White 11, Martin 11... that's it for double figures.

Most pleasing thing as far as improvement is concerned is that for the whole season last year we kicked 246 goals and 187* behinds... so with 3 games left our scoring output is already higher than last season and our accuracy slightly better.

* Does not include rushed behinds... purely players kicking...

It's made a big difference.

Last year we kicked 246.238 (51%) - 1714, with a percentage of 73.0%.
This year we've kicked 253.222 (53%) - 1740, with a percentage of 83.5%.

Dusty would have kicked a few more too had Tuck been played more but thats another subject

Our backend has been our problem .

Defineately one of the bright spots on our season this increased spread .

Mitch Morton and Griffiths are the wildcards next year . Throw them fit and firing into the mix and we have some weapons . Important Nahas backs up . My "hope" is that he dosnt go down the "Pettifer" path like so many players do in our jumper and never advance on that one good season

Dont forget IDDY, a fit Astbury, Grimes, Moore & Batchelor down back with Rance and our back half would look a tonne better off.

Hopefully get to pump some games into the younger guys instead of seeing them injured on the sidelines and having to watch Thursfield & McGuanne every week.

I think people need to come to the realisation the Kel Moore is all but finished . Grimes for all intents and purposes had become a real key in a very short space of time and i don't reckon it was was any coincidence that our run ended when his hammy went .

We need another Key back ... a ruckman .. and another gilt edged mid

Considering how we have been r*ped in the middle all year its even more of a credit that we've managed to kick the scores we have .

I think our backend has varied between quite good at times and very bad at other times. We've run quite a few combinations through and some have gelled better than others. But really, the problems with the backend will be improved significantly if our midfield wasn't letting the ball come out as much.

Agree ... agree ... agree. If we could add those 3, it would go a fair way to addressing our three key deficiencies and also drop three of our weaker players out of the best 22. It would be like a double hit improvement.
