SPINE:
LONERGAN (CHB) HAWKINS (RUCK) OTTENS (RUCK) MOONEY (CHF) PODSIADLY (CHF), were all woeful. Mind you, there were others but these guys have a history of this, especially in the big game. People talk up Podsiadly, but have a look at he’s average goals per game against top 4 sides, it’s barely 1 goal.
At times, especially in the first half, it seemed Hawkins was doing the bulk of the ruck, why wasn’t Ottens on the ground rucking every time Jolly was? Ottens looked slow, hurt and old…..is he’s time up? I think so, he can’t keep being injured for 75% of the season and expect to wing it come finals. And for Hawkins, why didn’t they try him forward , becayse Jolly was winning all the hit outs to advantage.
JOLLY, killed us, if you watched carefully , he won a lot of hit outs to advantage and as a result, Collingwood inside 50 within a second. Why didn’t they learn from last game and have 2 quality rucks in? I know k rock was speaking about it all year ever since.
GOOD PLAYERS IN GOOD SIDES: Enright and Mackie are classic examples of this, although Mackie didn’t play, he was drafted to the side to be a key CHF, but was crap so they had to re create him as a defender. He played a linkman role which you could put anyone there; he has probably the worst hard ball gets in the club let alone the AFL. Great call getting him out. Enright, look at Daniel Kerr, when he had Cousins and Judd getting all the treatment he was seemed to be a star, runner up Brownlow 2 years in a row. But now he gets the main taggers he goes to the toilet. Look at Enright, classic example when sides started playing on him as a defender, roughly from round 16-19. And what happened? He went to the toilet.
One thing I like to see is see my team get beat in the home and away. The reason being is that you can be honest with yourself and see team errors. Clearly I want them to win finals, but h & a is for developing and educating yourself about your current side. When you watch things go wrong for the cats it is always the same old problems…..
1 HUGE PROBLEM, we have had this problem since Ablett Snr left, we don’t have a good key forward, Mooney has been good for what we have , and is probably our best forward, but in the ranks of the AFL he is not highly regarded.
Look at the premiership forwards of the past decade, LLOYD, LYNCH(bris), BROWN, HALL, GOODES, TREDREA, MOONEY…not in the same league. The only other club who won a flag without a gun forward was West Coast with Quentin Lynch.
GAMEPLAN: Bomber in all honesty, we talk about good coaches? Milk Moulthouse has taken 3 clubs to top 4 finishes winning 2 gfs, I wouldn’t call the West Coasts flags as fare game due to obvious reasons with salary cap concessions, draft concessions ect, same with Brisbane.
Bombers current game plan and training philosophies where Brendan McCartneys doing, not Bombers.
Sure Bomber is clearly a elite coach, but he has failed to evolve as a AFL coach, unless u evolve you need to move on, like Mark Williams, & Kevin Sheedy after 3 decade and even John Worsefold. Once your gameplan is figured out, i.e Clarkson from hawks, u either evolve or move on simple…
Collingwood were public saying cats were too predictable with how they moved the ball, how they used to corridor and there patterns to predictably…..and what do u no, did they change it? No, hence why Collingwood got all these good turn overs and tackles.
People say Cats played bad, maybe the truth is Collingwood were awesome, they exposed the Cats again and clearly did there homework….and also mention words like desire and skill and pace….like unless you can be honest with what’s exactly going on and not living in denial, you cannot appreciate the AFL with its Drafting system, nor move the best way as a club.
FUTURE: People are saying Cats are too old, isn’t 28 years old when u r a prime footballer? That’s Chapman…..Guys like Ablett, Bartel and Kelly are round 26?
Our premiership window isn’t really over yet…if we can draft the un contracted Cox into the side, that could be a huge difference, because he can also go forward. All we need is a new Gameplan and well be good again, we have all the same players, and as stated before, they are not terribly old…..just their game plan is now tapt resource.
