TASMANIA VS. GOLD COAST ACADEMY
LIKELY Tasmanian draftee Chayce Jones has starred in the opening game of the NAB AFL Under 18 Academy Series at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday.

After trailing at quarter-time, Tasmania booted eight goals to one in the second quarter, to move to an uncatchable lead over the Gold Coast Suns Academy side, eventually running out 45-points winners.

Last weekend, 18-year-old Jones impressed in front of recruiters at the MCG against the North Melbourne VFL side, continuing his strong form in the attacking half of the ground, booting four goals to help the Mariners to a big win.

A serious injury curtailed majority of the Mariners captains bottom-age season, with a serious ankle injury requiring surgery – doctors had to insert a plate into the side of his leg near his ankle, which was screwed together.

Outside Midfielder Fraser Turner collected a match-high 34 disposals, 10 marks and seven inside 50s, aided by ruckman Tim Auckland who used his frame well around the ground and was the Mariners best player on the day.

North Melbourne Next-Generation Academy prospect Tarryn Thomas (23 disposals) did some good things throughout the mornings, continuing to put his hand up for a possible Top 10 bid.

Mariners overager Thomas Mundy and Blair Rubock both booted three goals each.

For the Suns, tall defender Caleb Grahamshowed some good signs overhead, claiming five marks for the game – repelling multiple Mariners attacks from defensive 50.

Midfielder Bailey Scott used his speed through the midfield, gathering 23 disposals, five clearances and a goal.

Scott is eligible to be drafted by three clubs (as well as having the option of entering the open draft), as the son of former Cat (132 games) and Kangaroos (111 games) player Robert Scott is eligible for father-son both clubs, as well as being part of the Gold Coast Suns academy.

194cm tall defender Dirk Koenen was the Suns’ best player for the contest, taking eight marks for the match.

Tasmania face Northern Territory in Melbourne next week, while Gold Coast will play Brisbane Lions Academy at South Pine.

TASMANIA 1.1 9.3 10.6 15.9 (99)
GOLD COAST 2.1 3.2 5.5 8.6 (54)

GOALS
TASMANIA:
Jones 4, Rubock 3, Mundy 3, Dakin 2, Banks-Smith 2, O’Neill
GOLD COAST: Smith 2, Burke, Conroy, Graham, Greenwool, Lowah, Scott

BEST
TASMANIA:
Auckland, Turner, Jones, House, McGuinness, Gadomski
GOLD COAST: Koenen, Smith, McDonald, Scott, Graham

Really?? A borderline flogging against Tasmania. What the hell is going on.,

Tassie went in last year with very much a underaged team , this year they have all come up together , much stronger.
Fair enough. Having Tarryn Thomas certainly helps!

For the 18 yr olds Thought Smith did well when he went forward, Stone was solid in defence . As for the 2019 crop Wingrave, Gore and Budarick did some nice things

Were you at the game?

I remember someone coming into this thread a few years back stating Josh Gore was the one to watch for the '01 class. He's only 176cms according to AFL.com.au so you hope he has a bit of growth left in him.

Only saw the second half , was there mainly for the Lions game. Tasmania were unbelievable

Tasmania used to regularly beat every team in Div 2 including all of Queensland and NSW. It has only been the last two years that were bad. This year there are a lot more draftable players from here. Thomas and Jones might be first rounders, but Gadomski, Turner, Auckland, Rubock, Anderton, McGuinness, and a few others are all really decent players too with an okay draft chance and will probably all play allies.

Thanks for that info, because Tas have had very few players drafted recently I thought maybe it was a horrendous result, but that puts things in perspective.

Josh Gores brother Luke is about 190 cm and does competition body building so you would hope there is some growth in him lol

Austin Harris is a gun. Dad played State cricket for QLD and Tas. Austin is a fine cricketer as well. Keep an eye out for the under age boys listed. Not all Suns academy though.

National Diversity carnival finished today. (Victoria winners, highly controversial) Tasmania kicked a goal at the death after Vic thought they had already won. Ump made Tas take the shot again (!!!) and the boy couldn't replicate the 50m feat. Game can be seen here;

QLD, Best player; Austin Harris

Player of carnival; Austin Harris

(Made) World team; Austin Harris

One to watch..

I was just listening to this weeks Northern Exposure Podcast and Jarrod Harbrow mentioned the young fellow I’ve noticed for the future Malachi Dumas.
Pretty interesting to see Harbrow specifically name Dumas and no other indigenous juniors. Probably indicates he is the standout in the JHLA. Has he transferred to PBC or is he still playing for Cooly?

I think he plays for PBC as his weekend club but does not go to PBC High School.

Just a guess here but I'd say if he remains a standout in the Suns academy then there will be some pressure on him to transfer to PBC High in order to better his development and chances of being drafted. Obviously he may have his own reasons for not transferring (like Bailey Scott) but purely from an uninformed point of view, it's probably better for his footy if he switches to PBC High.

The Gold Coast academy are about to get underway against the Lions up at South Pine so that should be interesting to see if there are any standouts for the Suns.

No doubt he will go there in Year 11/12. Then when he’s a star the PBC publicity machine will do their thing.
It’s what they do.

Connor Budarick seems like a pretty well spoke young man. Is Budarick a famous last name in local GC footy circles? I feel like I've heard it before...

I also just watched an interview with Jacob Dawson and he talked about his good start to the NEAFL season. So exciting to see our academy products doing well!

It's really no different to what happens down south in Victoria. Every Victorian junior will start their footy at a local suburban club and once they reach 15/16 they will transfer to a TAC Cup club and/or an APS school. The TAC Cup club and/or APS school will then take credit for the junior once they get drafted into the AFL.

In fact, Southport were notorious for stealing GC juniors and taking all the credit for their development. That happened with Nick Riewoldt (Broadbeach), Dayne Beams (Carrara), Daniel Merrett (Surfers Paradise), Marcus Ashcroft (Surfers Paradise) Andrew Raines (Palm Beach) and others.

It's just a part of footy.

We had a Budarick in our Academy a few years ago. Wasn't good enough to get drafted.

Unsure if this is his younger brother or not.

Dyson Budarick is his brother who played in our academy. Plays for Southport now I think.

Probably going to be one of those years where there are a few standouts but most of the GC academy is filled with average players. Should get a better gauge on where Scott, Graham and Koenen sit once the Allies start playing games.
