Having just read the psot about Ringo Starr though that I would start a new post on greatest drummer of all time. My top three (with explanations) are:

1.Alan Wren(Reni) Stone Roses. Has been described in the UK as one of the greatsest drummers of his generation so who am I to disagree? Not only was he a brilliant drummer but also plays guitar and sang back-up vocals whilst with the Roses. When he left the Stone Roses in the mid nintees the band soon lost its' way and imploded shortly after. Alan Wren- simply the best!!

2.Keith Moon (Who) This guy was an absolute freak of nature. Just watching him play was truly a mesmersing experience.

3.Dennis Wilson (Beach Boys) Whilst Brian Wilosn predomiantly used session drummers on most Beach Boys albums, Dennis Wilson was without doubt the highlight of most Beach Boys concerts. His charisma, sex appeal and unparrelled passion for performing live shone like a beacon when he was in his prime. For those who may doubt his ability check out Beach Boys live at Knebworth (1980) Probably the last great performance of the only Beach Boy who could catually surf!!

About the 27th thread on this topic. I must be a sucker.....

All time favourite: Neil Peart. The great man. There are technically more gifted players around, but as far as achievements and being influential are concerned, just about untouchable. And the main reason I assault the skins.

Best I've ever seen: Virgil Donati. Jack of all trades, master of all trades.

Best in my favoured genre (Metal): Gene Hoglan. A giant in all aspects. Amazing to watch.

Have to split it into 3 categories.

Maybe this thread might answer your question? Or perhaps this one, or maybe this one, and then there was this one or of course this one or for a slightly different twist on the topic try this one?

But in answer to the question of greatest it depends on what criteria we're using to judge. For all round technical proficiency, id have to flip a coin between Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann and Virgil Donati. Those guys actually scare me how far they've taken the craft and i'm pretty confident in saying they've never had sex either. There is just no way you could become that good and have time for a life.

But for all round artistry, Vinnie Colaiuta is my #1. He is the most well rounded player i've ever heard.

But for reasons completely different to all of that, John Bonham is the greatest to me. His ideas, his feel, his power and none the least that sound.... i could go on forever as i usually do, but in a nutshell, his playing can actually make me emotional sometimes. He changed things forever. There will never be another one like Bonzo.

I must be the only poster who hasnt started his own "best drummer" thread... But FWIW: Gene Hoglan.

Proves one thing. People actually think about drumming these days. The art form has become more recognised over the years, as it's developed. I feel like the drums have almost become the 'lead instrument' in alot of bands, since the demise, or at least massive fall from prominence, of the lead guitar solo. Go back before Bonzo and maybe Mitch Mitchell, and the drummer in a band was merely a backbeat, someone heard but barely seen.....

drummers were well recognised in the 60's-70's, i think they wernt in the 80's as much because synths took over.

So Carlos what do you think of Matt Cameron?
A legendary poster by the name of Angus tells me he can play a bit.;)
What do you think of Matt's playing Carlos???
He used to play with Soundgarden. Are you familiar with them?? :p
