For those of You who have Eye Of The Tiger read the greg miller article it is pretty good it tells you about recruiting etc.

He said the following which i thought was interesting.

Although we missed on Solomon, we’ve been delighted with what ‘Browny’ has given us so far. And, we believe Nathan can provide the Richmond Football Club with 7-8 years of top-quality football.

He has helped ease the pressure on our midfielders and given us another viable scoring option. You can see the benefits of this, for example, in the way Matthew Richardson is playing at the moment. And, like Kane Johnson, Browny’s work on the training track lifts all the other players around him. He’s a thorough professional . . .

I have no doubt that if we are lateral enough in our thinking recruiting-wise, then it is still possible – and achievable – to pick up some quality players later on in the draft, as I think we’ve shown with our selections of Brent Hartigan (at pick 70), Andrew Raines and Tommy Roach (under the father-son rule) late last year.

Let me assure you that we’ll be adding a few more talented young players to the list at the end of this year who will make you sit up and take notice.

Finally, I’d just like to advise you that we do not have a set policy one way or another with regards to use of our first-round draft pick. While it’s certainly very important to bring talented youth into our club, the opportunity to pick up a player of Nathan Brown’s calibre at choice 6, was unique – and too good to pass up . . .

It’s been well-documented that we made 13 changes to our playing list, bringing in a mix of youngsters, recycled players, and, of course, a proven performer in Nathan Brown.

Let me reiterate – this balanced recruiting approach is a necessity in these times. There’s simply not the depth in the TAC Cup under-18 pool to enable you to go out and recruit 13 young players.

Furthermore, the cost of each junior that you bring to your club is around the $125,000 mark, once you pay for a minimum two years’ salary, plus transfer fees, relocation expenses, etc. So, the financial considerations must be taken into account.

Secondly, you must fill the gaps in your playing list while the kids are developing. The example here is a Shane Morrison coming to the club and taking the pressure of a Jay Schulz to play senior league football each week at this early stage of his development. Whether Morrison becomes part of our next premiership side, the ball’s in his court. But at least him being here allows Schulz to develop at the rate that he should, and not be thrown to the wolves
