Hey guys,
I'm a beginning guitar player and looking for a website/forum that can help me understand alot more about playing guitar and answer any questions that come up.
Also any good websites to buy a guitar off of?
I want to buy a standard fender squire strat if that helps at all.
cheers

Gday mate, if you're after new you could seek out from your local music shops one of those starter packs that give you a small amp, cable, shoulder strap, tuner, picks, etc if you need that gear too. I think my local shop stocks them for about $400 - otherwise keep your eye on ebay for something local & take a mate that can play along to check it out.

As for websites, I like: www.ultimate-guitar.com that has a mountain of tablature on it too: a good way for music illiterate to pick up the basics of songs.

Use google to find the million sites out there though - also a massive amount of lessons on youtube.

Cheers for that mate. I've got all that gear already, I have been playing regularly for about 3 months now so I am pretty much set with that stuff. I just need a new guitar, I have an Ibanez at the moment which I picked up for $200 but I just don't like it ha. For some reason I fell in love with the fender strat but because I am not a good player and also cant afford the normal ones I am very keen to get a squire.

Thanks for the ultimateguitar site though, I used to look up tabs on google so thats made it alot easier.
Is there any free programs like guitarpro?

Ultimate-guitar is a pretty good website to use. I use it when I need to.

But I'll offer you a piece of advice, stay away from Squires!!

ha whys that? Whats bad about them?
Everyone has their own experiences & opinions on most brands. I'd recommend you get along to your local music shop & try as many different guitars as you can. The thing with cheaper guitars though is you may need to make a few mods or at least have it setup correctly - action, etc.
Whatever you end up with - keep practicing, playing along to songs, jamming with mates - but above all have fun!

Well, this is just from my experience from playing other people's (never owned one myself). But the pickups are crap, the necks are crap, they play badly, I could go on for hours. But hey, that's just me.

Try www.guitartabs.cc

Apart from an extensive tabs library, this site has a very helpful forum where you can learn just about all rudiments of music theory on all levels of difficulty, tips, licks, etc. Their moderators (Halfmoonbay, in particular) are more than helpful.

Try www.harmony-central.com for one of the best music resource sites around. There are official and user reviewers who give full reviews of instruments on different criteria and rate them out of ten.

No tab websites.

If you're serious about learning you'll learn to read. Going to a teacher would be my best advice. It might cost a little more, but at least you'll learn how to play the thing.

Quick fixes on musical instruments are no different to quick fixes on anything else. You learn squat.

If you need any help with anything, fling me a pm and I'll help you out.

I never took lessons, and use tabs very often. But I still know how to read music.

And?

If the person in question wants to seriously learn how to play guitar then obviously a bit of theory knowledge would go a long way to achieving that. Being able to read would go even further.

Tabs are just the easy way out. You might learn the chords to a few songs, but instrument wise you don't learn anything at all.

Yeah I have a book I bought which teaches me how to read music. I had a couple of lessons last year but I didnt practice enoug because I was doing year 12 and had little time to. So they were pretty useless. And my teacher was just a show off and spent half the lesson playing random riffs. I am really keen on learning everything properly the first time. The thing I have most trouble with is understanding the terminology/lingo everyone that plays guitar uses.
So I think you might get a few PMs here and there:) cheers for that, I need someone who won't judge me if I ask a dumb question, I posted on UG and all they told me was how dumb I sound...
