This message has been doing the email rounds for a while and it is a hoax.

Agreed. There are many variations of the hoax. Some have the needle lodged in the handsets of pay telephones. Others in gas (petrol) pumps. They are always shown to be hoaxes, but potentially real. Unfortunately, some idiot may get the idea to actually do it, so prudence should be observed.

The thing about HIV is that it doesn't survive long outside the body. A more viable bio-weapon would be hepatitis, which could remain active and infectous inside a needle for up to 16 hours.
