HA HA Nicko, my dog has a classic case of separation anxiety.

I love teasing him by hiding when he is outside, he comes in every ten minutes or so, just to check I am still there. I hide behind a door, or furniture & he runs around crazy checking every room, then runs outside to see if I am there, then comes back inside, checking all the rooms once again, when he starts whining because he can't find me, I come out of hiding & he is happy as. :D

:D :D :D :p :p :p
i might try that, but instead... i'll scare one of them by jumping out of the corner

i might sound incredibly nasty and morbid for saying this, but i often feel sadder when animals die than humans. on the war movies where the guy gets shot off his horse... i'm here thinking.. poor horse!

I'm like that too nicko, ever since I can remember, I always cry when an animal in a movie/TV show gets hurt, lost, or killed, but not when it happens to humans, don't know why, maybe because amimals are more vulnerable & humans can look after themselves.

We went to see Final Destination 2 today & people died some horrific deaths, didn't faze me one bit, but if it had have been animals, I would have cried non stop through the movie.

Like I've said before I have 3 cats. But two of them are actually by 'default', so to speak. I had just one cat for years. He is almost 12 years old now. But around 3 years ago two strays turned up on my doorstep, and being the soft touch that I am, I took them in. One of those former strays is the cat that is sick now, no doubt a legacy from his neglected past.
When I took the two strays in a friend gave me this poem. I have it stuck on my fridge with a magnet. I think it's lovely and very typical of cats. You may think it's sentimental crap but here it is anyhow.

Gawd, I am really ruining my nasty bitch image in here tonight, eh?
:p

Stray Cat

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth, and food
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.

While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.

He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh Cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come forlorn and thin
Well...don't just stand there...Come on in!

Couldn't have said it better myself, Mantis. We (humans) can look after ourselves, but pets depend on us for their well being.

i get the feeling that if an animal dies, it is mostly the fault of a human. if a horse breaks a leg falling over during a race, or killed in a war movie, we have failed in our duty to protect it. they put their lives in our hands, and we are forever betraying them.

thats why i felt so bad when i lost my dog. i felt responsible for letting down a helpless creature who trusted and depended on me for its safety

My heart goes out to you Bee. My daughter had the same problem with her old man cat and she was told in May 2000 that he had kidney failure and should be put to sleep. She got another opinion and was told not to be too hasty. They kept him in hospital for a couple of days and then she opted to have him treated with a special diet, low protein or something and he is still kicking on today. He will be 16 years old in September.

Your philosophy sounds pretty spot on to me. I think our furry friends are more than just a dog or cat, they are part of our family and it is damn hard to lose them.

Our poor Rex had to be put to sleep when he was 14 as he had 3 strokes and just kept having them. He was a beautiful German Shepherd and the vet came home and did the deed there. Very hard decision to make and very emotional time. We had to move after that as I couldn't bear to see his grave as it just tore me up. Nearly 9 years later and we still miss him.

WTF does that have to do with this thread?

Look No need to be rude. I explained what was going on and copped abuse. My wife (who has never posted anything in her life)
Saw the "hard decisoins" thread didn't realise that you had to read the thread and decided to post.

A thousand apologies.

BTW Cats are an introduced species and should be erradicated.

Bee,
Not sure I see your problem - you say the cat is not in pain? Surely the simple measure is if his/her quality of life is fair to good, then play it by ear and see what happens.

Other measure is don't be a tool like my father, who was either too selfish or gutless to put down his dog when it had been in bad health for some time.

I've had to put down 2 loved healthy cats due to human crap - very sad - one of them had saved my life.

Have had cats for over half my life and talk to many feline friends on my walks.

Am currently dominated by my infamous evil black & white cat, who eats better than most people. Some of my friends claim he is spoilt.

A violent gourmand, he regularly gets free range, chemical free roast chicken, marlin or tuna fillets and Yamba prawns.

He doesn't like Sydney rock oysters or gamey lamb and prefers Atlantic salmon to ocean trout.

Cats. Great animals. Great friends.

Bee, sorry to here about your cat. I think you've made the right decision not to get him put to sleep. As long as he's not in any pain he should be kept alive. I've lost quite a few pets in my life. The 1st one was my dog who the vet hada to put down because she was in too much pain. :( Like a couple of others have already said on here, I also get more upset when animals die than when humans die. Just the other week I was watching All Saints on TV & was really fighting back the tears when the dog of one of the Dr's had to be put down. :(

Just like you. So go eradicate yourself!

Good chance to show your green credentials.

In remote Australia. feral cats are a major problem growing to approx 1 1/2 times the size of a normal cat. If you spotlight trees at night you will see them full of feral cats to the extreme detrimate of our native
species.

Once we found a sick kangaroo mouse and nursed it back to health and released it in to the wild and the next day our cat (Sterilised and with a bell) brought it back into the house dead.

From that time on I have believed that cats have absolutely no place in Australia.

Actually Ripper is right about the feral cats bit. Ripper, i seen a documentary on ABC TV a while ago about some aboriginal women who caught and ate feral cats. Perhaps you should go find some of these people and bring them to live on your property. I know this topic is on domesticated cats, but don't some have a tendency to like birds?
