Can anyone fill me in on the latest rage of Harry Potter. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I have heard that it is like The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe series from about ten years ago. Any thoughts? More to the point, is anyone going to see the movie or has anyone been to see it?

CS Lewis, the author of the Narnia chronicles, died in 1963. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was published in 1950.

If you read and liked these books as a kid, but are a bit older now (ie grown up) try The Screwtape Letters. Highly recommended

Fair enough, they must have released them again when i was a kid cos i still have these books that were like brand new. I did like the books and thanks for the recommendation but i don't have the time to read no more.........

If your really want to see where Rowland got the idea (blatantly stole) from, read 'the Books of Magic' (yes a comic) by Neil Gaiman.

Well it's not really stealing the idea, because they were comic books and not story books. She's just "extending" the other idea :)

Geez I hate it when people say 'just comic books'.

Okay, in 88/89 Neil Gaiman created a character called Tim Hunter. English schoolboy, bespectacled, apprentice magician who happens to have a pet owl. Heres a quote from a news article,

A Nod to Potter
The Books of Magic, whose hero is a dead ringer for Harry, hasn’t been caught up in the wave. DC Comics chose not to market the comic book to children, freeing Gross to write much darker story lines than Rowling — in one of the many alternate worlds featured in the series, Tim Hunter ends up selling his soul to a demon to save the world and becomes a bearded vagrant living in a cardboard box.
That didn’t stop Gross from putting in a nod to Potter in his final issue of The Books of Magic. Tim’s obnoxious stepbrother Cyril puts on a “glamour stone,” which turns him into a familiar face. Cyril steps onto a platform at King’s Cross Station … and he’s off to Hogwarts.
“What the hell,” said Gross. “It’s nice to acknowledge Harry a little bit.”

So thats why I think she should at least give some recognition to where she got at least some of the idea from.

Also, every story that can be told HAS been told. All thats left is to rework whats gone before. Good luck (like she needs it) to Rowland on her success, but as said by others, the Chronicles of Narnia, The Dark is rising, Books of Magic all came and contributed (specifically in my view the Tim character) to Harry Potters coming into being.

Cheers.

My girlfriend is forcing me to read it. I say I hate it and she says I can't say something like that if I know nothing about it (which is true, I don't). She says she will respect my opinion if i read it (and I may get a reward ;) ).

woowoo ;)

Actually I held out no hope for it at all but I run a bookshop so last weekend I finally read one & it was 80 times better than I thought it was going to be. Easy to read, fun, simple complete little world..Is quidditch footy? cause they are so into it! It teaches tolerance toward people who look or act "different" .........which can only be a good thing right?

Harry Potter is fantastic.

Great stories, great characters (And not just Harry, all the others)

I've just read all 4 books in the space of about 2 weeks and am completely addicted!!

I will be seeing the movie as I think those books would make a great movie. Hopefully they don't mess it up!

My recommendation if ppl are curious is read the first book, Harry Potter and the Philophers Stone. It's about 200 pages, so it's not a huge time investment and I bet - like me - you'll be hooked.

Trust me, they're great!
