Didn't see the game and was wondering how all of our young players, Taylor in particular as he was talked up by the commentators, went in NAB1.

Taylor was good at fullback
West rucked with Blake in the 2nd half and was okay. He's very mobile.
Davenport started well, but wasn't seen a lot in the 2nd half
Scott Simpson was barely seen, but he might not have been used much
Djerrkura seemed to be on a lot but never got into the game
Gamble will be handy across half forward/forward pocket. He has a great leap.

thanks. what do taylor strengths and weakenesses appear to be. i.e his closing speed, contested marking, setup from defence etc

It was only the first game we saw of him! Gutsy though, didn't shirk at any challenges at all!

Taylor was good in defence. His closing speed on the marking play was quite good, on a number of occasions catching his opponent off guard.

If it wasn't for two ridiculous free kicks paid against him (bring back Goldspink ;' ), those umps today were terrible), I probably would have given him an 8 out of 10 for his game.

He impressed IMO.

Gamble - Really isn't a new recruit, but did quite well. Amazing athletic ability, just love his game. A big plus
is that he can finish, actually kicks straight unlike someone else we know!

Djerkurra - Did a bit, found it tough though as skills weren't quite up to scratch. Will do better for the run.
He chases hard, puts the head over the ball a lot. Lots of courage.

Simpson - Rarely seen, but is a big lad. I'm sure he will come along. I'd hate to be at the bottom of the
pack when he flies for a mark. Big lad indeed.

West - Rucked a bit, hard to beat White for a tap but did some good ground work. Turned the ball over in
front of goal was a let down, but he did ok for the most part. Even tried to take on someone with a
burst of run, but has got to remember that this is the AFL not the VFL, he will get caught doing that
in the big time.

Taylor - Was impressed. This guy will play this year for sure. Good body up, is strong and didn't shirk the
contact. Played well and has good hand and foot skills. Linked up a few times also.

Davenport - Was exciting early. Got the ball a bit, however cooled off after the break. Not too sure how
much gametime he had after that, however he kicked goals early and looked the goods. Fitness is probably
the key there.

Lonergan - Did really well early. Found space and marks. Kicked a couple before being swung into defence.
Probably ahead of the manchild at the moment.

Hawkins - Struggled all day. Lead up a few times and took nice grabs, but didn't do enough. Not too sure if
the weather took any part of his play away from him, but seemed to struggle against some close checking.
Will be better for the run I think.

I was very impressed by Taylor, looks to be a great pick-up, hopefully he can get a few senior games this year, i agree he has good link up skills and is solid in a contest.

I saw Taylor last week play on Mooney and I was worried.

After today's game, I have a lot more hope for him. He seemed pretty comfortable in aerial contests, on the lead and rebounding out of 50. He also seems to have a nice left foot on him.

Good signs for the kid.

Gamble over Byrnes

If Gamble dosn't take Byrnes spot. Then Byrnes is the legit child of Billy Brownless. ;)

Also Harry 'BOY' Taylor looked like the future of Geelong's defence with Egan & Mackie.

Thought Taylor was okay. Hard to judge on a single game, but he did a few nice things, particularly in contests when the ball was hot and had to be won.

I don't think he's capable of being a direct replacement at CHB for Egan (looks more comfortable as a third tall, the way he moves, which should be fine once Scarlett returns) but he looks like he could go some way to helping shore up our defense as we look to make-do while Egan remains on the sidelines.

Since we're on the topic of talls down back though, thought Mackie did a few nice things on the defensive end of things. Body-on-body, one-out contested stuff. Certainly promising given it's a facet of his game that needs to improve as he looks to take the next step up.

Agree with everything that was said. The strategy in the second half looked like it was to put the acid on the kids and I thought they stood up well (even in the third quarter it seemed to be senior players making mistakes).

That Taylor will be a gun, Lonners would be BOG in the first quarter, and the others held up well.

As for others, I know others disagree but I thought Byrnes played one of the better games I've seen him play. I was impressed with Blake's effort too. I don't think he'll ever be a natural kick under pressure but when he has a sec to steady and think about it he's not as bad as he was. Second efforts were very, very good - Otto is clearly teaching him!

Taylor was good but how will he get into the team unless we get injures???:confused:

I doubt he will. But a year or two playing largely VFL wouldn't hurt him. Maybe things will have changed in that time, who knows.

Egan is gone for half of 2008 with injuries. Taylor could take a tall forward- whether i'ts at CHB or Flank/pocket, Depending on Milburn or Harley...
Our Depth over the ground is bloody scary, especially the defence.

Clever lad, saying that just to get a potential S & M slapping session from Nicki Brownless! She'd absolutely slap you silly:D

I'd think he may replace Milburn at one stage, depending on how many years he has left in him.

i thought Byrnes was close to best on ground yesterday - looked much sharper than last - has liofted his game

I would agree here, but I tell you what. I went and had a look on Saturday and being a backline player myself, I find I watch the backline a little closer and I really, really liked Taylor. So much so, he sorta stuck out to me. Didn't look like a first timer at all. Very promising and who knows what the future may hold for him. Milburn is openly saying he's only got a couple of seasons left? I know they're not the same players but that could be the spot.
